The ultimate exhaust sound

From what I've been hearing, it's tough (or impossible) to modify the ms3 exhaust to give an aggressive growl at throttle AND be quiet at cruising AND be legal in California.

What I've been thinking for years now is to have a special effects audio system in the car to mimic exhaust sounds. I think most car stereo systems now a days have enough oomph to create convincing sounds, say a big v8 growl or Ferrari sound or turbo sounds, that you can control with the volume knob, that you can turn on or off. The sound needs to be tied to the engine RPM of course.

I've been hoping that a car manufacturer would have this feature because it would be simple and cheap. Most people wouldn't have to install aftermarket parts because most people are mainly interested in the aggressive noise.

Does anyone know about any car company looking into this? Or is this a bonker idea? Would anyone pay an extra $200-300 for a feature like this?

MMMMM.....stickers. They've come so far. Pretty soon, you'll be able to slap a picture of a 4 cylinder, 2.3 liter DISI under your hood and be ready to go!

In all honesty, the speaker system exhaust trick is a creative idea, but I don't think many people in the serious modding community will like it. Most of us here would rather pay that money for real performance rather than the sound. I give you credit for thinking of something new, but its definitely suited more for people who value "show" over "go". Interesting idea, but not my type of mod.

Edit - Of course, you do have it tough in CA...they really don't leave you much choice with those emissions standards, do they?

Wow, I'm not sure who the bigger retard is, the guy who came up that idea or the idiots that actually buy it.

And to the OP you're idea is right up there with what Kain just posted and those stupid things you can install under your hood that make BOV sounds. Please stick to eating rice, not trying to re-invent it.

yea i saw this s*** on pimp my ride they put it on a mini van.
and thats jus rediculous the speed sounds nice enough no need to go all ricey on it

in the second or F&F thats what they did with the supras they only had one modded engine and the rest were stock and some were N/A thy made vinal posters of the good engine to stick under the lexan panels...

reminds me of the honda commercial where you see all there cars and vans drivving arond and all you hear is one of there indy motors running

i see that it's not a popular idea here. no wonder the car companies haven't offered it as an option.

but if you think about it, the mods that you do to the exhaust only gains you 5, 10, or 15hp, depending on how extensively you mod it. it really makes negligible difference to the acceleration times like 0-60 or 1/4 mile. it's just the louder noise that makes you think that you're significantly faster.

so why go thru the trouble of chopping up your exhaust if you could get convincing, aggressive sounds thru your audio system?

One of the auto manufacturers already has done something like this with one of their models ... for the life of me I can't recall who it is although BMW is coming to mind.
