2002 Mazda Protege ES
Maybe someone could help me out on this. I have heard many variations. I just did a complete motor rebuild on one of my 02 protege and im going to run synthetic but I was told not to break it in on synthetic. I was told to break it in on 10w30 and then after the first 2000mi switch it over to synthetic. I have also been told that after a motor has been run on regular grade motor oil that you dont wanna switch it over to synthetic. Please help... its ready for start on sunday. Thanks

Now if I use a mineral oil to break it in on, what do i need to do when I switch back to synthetic? Im guessing 2 qt mineral and 2qt synthetic and then on my third oil change switch it to full synthetic?

Break it in on dino oil and then switch it cold turkey to synthetic. I've switched cars with 125,000 miles on the odometer with dino oil to synthetic without any problems.

That might be a little true for certain motors at a certain age. But overall, it's a myth.

Like Tom03es said, dino oil for about 2k miles then switch over to a full synthetic. Depending on your motor and what internals you have, you might want to give it about 4-6k miles.

On my 02 ES, when I bought is brand new, I gave it about 1500 miles and then switched to a full synthetic.

Ok. Well the motor had 97000 on it since then its been fully rebuilt and I just wanted to make sure so there are no issues during break-in. Thanks for the help guys.

Where might I be able to get a hold of some of this Dino Oil. I tried searching google but im coming up with nothing...

I just completed an engine swap on my MSP to a new forged block and internals. I'm at 500 miles on the new engine. I had a professional performance shop complete the swap. They told me to break it in just like you mentioned below:

I'm planning my first oil change at 2,000 miles.

FWIW I've broken in all of my engines on non synthetic for about 5,000Km. I use Shell Rotella T 15W-40 cause it's nice and thick and that's what you want on a new engine. Thick oil that's gonna let everything seat properly. Remember, your first oil change is at 250 miles, then again 500 later at 750. Keep using junk oil until 2,000 Miles or so. That change at 250mi, don't be surprised to find tiny bits of metal fleck, etc. THat's just the rings wearing in. That's why you change it then, cause there will be a good bit of stuff floating around in there alogn with leftover assembly lube, etc.
