New Guy With a Need to Mod

Hello ladies and gents,
I just picked up a 2006 silver speed 6 last week. Sorry no pics yet, but it's still completely stock. I've already made an appointment to get my clutch replaced (Mazda is paying for the whole thing even with 45k on the odo). After some window tinting (it's for sun protection, I swear!) I'll be doing some intake and exhaust work. So I guess my first questions is, what is the good stuff? I'd like to get more performance without sacrificing too much MPG and I'd like a deeper exhaust note without anything even remotely resembling a "rice boy sound". This is to be a sleeper/commuter whip.

Thanx for the welcome. I realize the search feature is a spectacular tool, but instead of reading through hundreds of posts of bad information, I was hoping someone would tell me the general consensus on the topic. It's cool, I'll read up.
