20lb safe or not.

I was talking with a friend of a friend who works at champion motorsports. I was telling him about my car, and he was saying I shold crank up the boost. He was saying that the car could handle 22-25 psi. I wanted to get the forums opinion on this. I would like to just up it to 20 with a boost controller. Is anyone doing this now? Is it safe? Any sort of expertise in this subject would be greatly appreciated, since this is my first boosted car I'm not to keen on the mechanics.

20 psi is not safe with this turbo.

with stock IC..i would say that 16-17psi is "Safe"
with upgraded TMIC i would say 18psi "Safe"
with FMIC i would say 18-20psi "Safe"

Since this is your first boosted car, i would suggest doing more reading on how maxed out this turbo is from factory.

a mechanic over at ocean mazda in miami told me the same thing, that this car should be able to hold 22 to 25 psi without any problem, he also told me mazda its replacing smoking turbos with a new stronger turbo. the guy its cool, hes the only guy who has done work on my car i strongly urge anybody who needs anything done to take it to ocean mazda, coolest dealer i ever known and i mean all around from the guys at the shop to their sales people.

guys are so full of s*** its funny !! i ran 20+psi on my stocker for MONTHS !! with no tuning at all. the car loved it too. it mat not be efficient in the long run for that small turbo, but for short bursts and daily driving it served me well. take advice from someone who has done it, not people who heard it from a guy whos cousins neighbor told them their mechanic said no not to.
my new PG k04 is also runnig 20+psi now. my car hauls ass and has ye to have an issue.

Was it stock TMIC? Was it winter or summer months?

What octane where you running?

My take on it is that running at 20psi may or may not be safe with this turbo but just remember that you are gonna void the warranty in your brand new car with this mod so proceed at your own risk.

yea driver did it too, i think he said something about 24psi? and the car was ridiculous

-stock i dont think anything close to 20 is safe...with some mods yea it can be done

it was on the stock TMIC and still is for a few more weeks. most of it was during winter months, but i had it for a while in the spring too. the new turbo has only been on for about 3 weeks. i was once a believer of the whole turbo is no good past 17-18psi crap that people keep preeching. well it is BS. i am not saying the turbo is totally efficient over 20psi, but it can very easily do it.
it also take some time for the turbo to create enough heat to become inefficient. one quick burst through a few gears at 20+ is not enough time to kill the performance. i would not recommed running a road course like that. but for street/drag racing i am all for it, and do it on a daily basis.

your an inspiration to me lol im putting my boost controller and boost gauge on monday. i want to run 18 psi

ok well hypothetically if something went wrong then couldn't u just take the controller out and take it to the dealer? Having it at 18 I think would be good to start.

Just weld the waste-gate shut if our motor is so strong and the turbo is so effecient

lets not get silly now ! i am just saying at first it was said that this poor puny littly k04 just couldnt go over 18psi. well its BS ! i and at least 4 others have been well over that point on a stocker. is it efficient to run that much constanly. like on a road course...no. will it make awesome power in short bursts before the heat builds...HELL YES !! once you get it too hot, you will notice some extra knock retard, but that was the worst thing i ever got from it. now that i have the reworked turbo, that is a thing of the past 20+ ALL DAY LONG !! not efficient you say....race me !

Thats the bull the turbo aint efficent at 20 psi 17 psi i good enough for our turbos.maybe 18.if u got u[gradded fuel pump and so on

yes and no. the turbo isnt efficient at 20psi OVER 5k..... thats when we let the throttle plate take care of that. when i run 21psi it still falls to 16psi at
6k. even a car with EMS will have the boost fall like that. so if you are running 18psi you will only be around 13psi at 6k, and the turbo can handle more than that. and BTW a fuel pump doesnt make it any more efficient, so i dont know what that had to do with anything. i also ran over 20psi on the stock turbo long before i got my pump upgrade. you are the posterchild for what i am talking about. people have been brainwashed into believing this nonsense. take it to a dyno and find out for yourself. i have done my fair share !

If anything goes wrong, couldn't I just take off the controller and take it to the dealer, and they would never know. Also I"m thinking I will just go to 18lbs then see how that goes over, just to be on the safe side.
