Maz 3 or Mazdaspeed 3

How much money would I save on a regular Maz3 vs a new Mazdaspeed3. I driven both and much prefer the speed but I'm having trouble convincing my wife to let me buy the speed because of it needing premium. How much better is the gas mileage on the regular 3?

Someone give me some good arguments over the regular 3 because I really want the speed.

the difference in premium fuel versus regular, isn't terribly significant over the course of the year. if you drive the speed lightly, and do a decent amount of highway driving -- u can get pretty solid gas mileage (25-30 mpg) out of a car thats pushin 263hp/280tq.

The Mazda 3 gets about 10% better mileage, and uses regular gas, which costs about 5% less than premium. If you drive 15,000 miles per year, my rough math (based on gas prices where I am) says that the MS3 will cost about $35 per month more in gas. Hardly a deal breaker, if you ask me.

All this is true but you need to consider the cost of insurance as well amongst other things. When you get a quote for it don't be too surprised (shocked)

My insurance quote was no different between the Speed and regular 3. The notion of high-HP or Turbos directly increasing insurance is an urban legend. Insurance premiums are based on 1. Driver, 2. How often the car is crashed, 3. How often the car is stolen, 4. How much the car costs to fix/replace. Nothing else.

ummmmmm.....well, when inquiring with my insurance company they quoted me 2 times as much for the speed than a regular 3, maybe you got an associate that messed up? Why don't you go tell everyone who's had their insurance go up after upgrading from a 3 to a speed 3 that they're not really paying more for a speed than a 3 and the money flying out of their account is just a legend. We're talking about the same business that charges differently based on gender and car color, you think they don't charge more based on turbo/hp numbers? C'mon man

Which insurance company? Cause I searched around a lot and the quotes were similar to the regular 3. This was progressive and allstate. The rates could've been adjusted again since, but they were suprisingly low from what I saw. Also I'm over 30 and have a clean record so that definitely helps.

Yeah, I'm 24 w/ a clean record but would obviously expect to pay more b/c of my age. I'm w/ USAA now but am shopping around to change it up when I get the new car. I was looking at difference between speed 3 and 3 w/ the same policies and everywhere I asked there was a significant difference. In addition to my own personal experience I know there have been many a forum member on here who either got a regular 3 because of insurance quotes or bought a speed 3 and had to downgrade after a few months because insurance kicked their butt. I had a friend who, all the sudden, had his rates skyrocket because they were charging him the normal 3 rate for the first couple of months and then realized their error and started charging him what it should have been all along. He was not happy.

^^Yeah I think a lot of the early buyers (like myself) benefitted a lot since the car was pretty much unknown. Thankfully it's held pretty steady for me.

Buddy got away with this for about 1yr... They sent him a letter telling him he owned them retro- pay or else. Yeah he had to pay back something like $900.00 which was the difference between the regular 3 and the speed3

Sorry but that's their screw-up. If that happened to me, I'm jumping ship and they're not seeing one dime. If they push it, they'll talk to a lawyer. As long as they had my vin # and I had paper work with the coverage outlined, they can't do jack. Your buddy either had no choice but to stick with them or got used like a tool.

If gas price is your major issue, (insurance obviously varies by the person) the difference between regular and premium is really not much. The speed3 has about a 14-15 gallon tank and the difference in gas prices from reg. to prem. is usually about 20 cents. So you are looking at roughly $3.00 more for gas each time you fill up. All you gotta do is not buy coffee for a day and that's covered.

Also keep in mind that the Speed3 has a 6th gear, which (if driven softly) can get a little over 30mpg on the highway. The best I have had so far was 32mpg (manually calculated, not using the on board).

Man, I wish the pro/3 had that 6th gear. I'm so sick of driving at highway speeds and my car begging me to shift into a gear I don't have.

lmfao@ jumping ship

Right, 5th and 6th gear are the same. (hand)

Turns out reverse and 3rd are the same, too.

6th gear in the speed is about the same RPMs as 5th in the regular 3 at 75. The speed transmission does not have 2 overdrives so it wont bring the RPMs down any.
