because it's a big fat pig. the evo 8/9 trap ~5mph higher and 1 second quicker than what they recorded, both of which outperform a normal 911 and are close to an elise (though a supercharged elise wasn't out back then). the evo has 2 big advantages over the MS3 (though the obv disadvantage of price): its awd drivetrain and the aftermarket. we'll have to see what happens with the MR's DSG box once people start making more power with them
to me that article says the biggest performance bargain is the GTR. you're going to have a tough time finding a car south of $150k that will be close

Dealers are marking these things up $5,000+. Who in their right mind would pay $40k+ for a suped up Lancer that's going to fall apart in 3 years like any other Mitsu?

fyi, only bad dealers are marking them up. shop around on evom or evoxforums a bit and you'll find a dealer in your area who will sell for well below MSRP without any haggling. also after owning an evo 8 for 2.5 years i had much, much more confidence that it would last a long time than i did after owning a protege for 2 years and from what i've heard the materials in the X are much better
