Calling all MS3 Owners with smoking Turbos...

its not just mazda.....just about every dealership makes a lot of their money off of these routine maintenance. they arent going to loose money on the situation unless its absolutely necessary, otherwise they would be paying out a lot of people and be broke. they tell you either get their service, do what they say, or suffer the consequence. i chose the worst of the three unfortunately. although, my dealership is kinda cool and i think i woul dget away with a lot more than some people here. find another dealership and see if they will fix it without all this hassle. but just so you know its not just mazda. trust me.

i dunno if this thread is still going... but i have a 07 and it runs terribly rich.. havent lost oil between changes i dont believe but my oil darkens WAY to fast.. i get 5k synthetic... before 3 k its already time to change ..really dark
i didnt read all 29 pages of these post.. but thats my concerns for my car..

its a turbo charged car.....they run a lot hotter than a reg na car. your oil will need to be changed more frequent than a na car. you could probably go 5k with the reg 3 but i wouldnt with the speed because of the extra parts and how the oil scorches so fast. i was thinking about going with someting like a 5-40 to get a better heat range for the summer....but im going to try royal purple first. i havent heard anything bad about discoloration from my buddies speed6 so i though id give it a try first.

I'm thinking about oil analysis to know for sure.

i heard a rumor. wonderign if true?

How many people with smoking turbos are running Synthetic oil?

About 1 month ago I had my TBE installed, and two days later...smoke, nice and blue!

I just changed my oil with Penzoil Platinum full synthetic 5W30, about 700miles ago. The reason I changed the oil myself was that the dealership waaayyy overfilled my oil (Oil line was above the bent part of my dipstick). So I said F them, and did it myself. Still smoking...I'm going to call the dealer next week as its really pissing me off. I even brought the car in and told them to check the turbo for bad seals, to which they replied "Everything looks fine". So yeah...after changing my oil to the proper oil levels, according to the dipstick, I still have smoke.

The reason I chose PP for oil was because I heard our engines are trying to dilute the oil with fuel. Anybody else know of this, or can confirm?

The rumor i heard is that the Synthetic oil is causing the turbos to have a smoking issue?
So i was just seing if that rumor is true or not. I was told to stay organic. No synthetic. I have no smioling issues but i am stock. and have run organic since new. But i also run 7 quarts now to!

Yeah...I was smoking before with the organic, and still smoking after...either way, oil is making its way past some seal and getting burned.

Well, well, guess what happened on the dyno today? We ran 2 pulls and let the car idle for a about 10 min while we were troubleshooting the dyno sensors. The dyno tech asked me to give it some gas to check the O2, intake air temp, boost, and RPMs when all out of a sudden, "POOF" I started smoking. It went away after a few revs of the engine, but it's started for me now too. It was enough smoke to fill the 2 car shop he has.

31K miles btw

Looks like i'm getting a new turbo soon.

damn man. I was hoping you'd never smoke cause i also have tbe and it's been on for like 3k now and there;s no smoke. So That means my car still has the possibility of smoking. You're replacing turbo on your own since u have 30K+? Do you think the aftermartker turbos would smoke too?

Ken from PG has said that he can't guarantee that the rebuilt stockers won't smoke because it's part of the K04's design. The Garrett ones shouldn't ever though I wouldn't think.

I have the extended warranty, so I'm going to get it replaced at the dealer.

ohh. i have that too, would they replace my turbo under that extended warranty even if i have tbe? this has probably been asked a million times.
Gotta return back to stock first, right? then two cats go back in the smoking disappear *poof* mazda magic!

mazda should standardize their customer service, some gets good service some (like me) gets crappy ones. On that alone I dont think i'll buy mazda again.

I don't get it with these turbos. If its a known design flaw, then why would Mazda (or anyone else) want to continue to replace with the same turbo in these cars? Why doesn't Mazda work with Hitachi-Warner to correct the design flaw? I've read about a newer part number in this thread (possible revision??) but also read of guys with 08's with low miles start smoking.

My dealer here says "unless the part can be determined to be the cause of the failure, It won't void the warranty" I'll leave my cp-e on when I take it in. My friend had his turbo replaced 2 times for smoking and 1 more time for a tech stripped thread on the third turbo. There were only 3 bolts put back in on the third turbo so he got a 4th turbo. He had cp-e non-catted DP, full custom 3" exhaust and CS FMIC and still in warranty.

The service manager also said that "Mazda knew that people would be modding this car, so they are more flexible than you would think" Very interesting how the differing dealer responses are even with that last comment.

Find a good dealer from feedback from other MS3 owners.

Dealer Invoice for turbo replacement

So after a small hassle at the dealership and a call to Mazda corporate I got my turbo replaced under warranty. If anyone is interested, here is a copy of the maintenance invoice for the repairs. I am just glad it is all over with and my car does not smoke anymore. Pretty sweet.

I noticed that i get smoke when i put my foot down but i have a DP and RP with Cats removed and my friend has a TBE Corksport his smokes and my other friends stock 2007 smokes too.so i guess its normal and all our mufflers are pretty much black like diesel cars:-)We have not noticed a loss in power, pull or acceleration due to the smoke.
