New Bose Stereo Problems

I have all the same questions. I have an appointment at the dealer Monday for a few things, and I want to make sure they know what needs to be done.

From what I could gather, all Bose (and possibly non-Bose) head units ordered from this point on should be free of the issues we have been experiencing. The word "recall" was never actually used, but that is effectively what we are dealing with. It is a very simple solution, but it can't exactly be cheap for Mazda to replace all 2008.5 head units that went out before the "fix". Who knows what Mazda's official solution will be, if/when there is one. I personally believe Mazda should call it what it is, and recall these puppies.

As for the sound of my new Bose head unit, it is noticeably richer. The bass is cleaner, and the treble is a bit less "tinny". There is definitely no more phantom bass drop-outs and there appears to be no change in sound quality throughout the volume range. This new head unit is definitely an improvement. (cabpatch)

That is great news. I'm not expecting a miracle, I just want decent sound with consistency. The drops in bass and crazy volume jumps are unacceptable.

Thanks for the info!

im going to have to call my dealership this weekend and have them order one so i can make an appointment to get a new one installed...FINALLY

My concern is WILL they order us a new one, or will we have to fight them on it? I'm hoping that Mazda communicates with the dealers as far as admitting this IS a problem and how to fix it.

I just got off the phone with my dealership...stealership and they told me that the service region manager is there today and they will talk to him about wether or not they will replace it, and to call back monday....wtf. F U C K you mazda

That's the kind of response from the dealer I was afraid of.

I know it's costly to replace all these units, but it's also costly TO BUY A NEW CAR. That's what warranties are for, they need to step up and take car of us if they think we'll ever buy another Mazda.

Discouraging to say the least.

I'm taking the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" mentality right now. I'm waiting until it's absolutely driving me nuts. Right now, i'm having more fun just driving and enjoying lower volume tunes. Infact, the 35 volume jump is sorta nice. Less turning of the knob lol.

As you can tell, i'm tryin to stay optimistic about it.

Latest from me...

Last week I informed dealership and emailed Mazda Canada. Got no response. I had a chance to just call both now:

1. Mazda Canada said "We are aware of the problem, call your dealership for a fix."
2. Dealership said "We have heard nothing about this, though we have had more than one person in the shop complaining of the issue."

Dealership service manager says he will look into it for me.

So it continues, with, perhaps, a fix coming?

Just wait it out. People are making their calls and the word is being spread. Now let the fix generate and be communicated. That's what i'd do...well I am doing that hehe.

mazda is really pissing my off with this car and the warranty. I have not even 1300 miles and they aren't doing s***....I should have gotten the Z or STI I was looking at

Hmm, they guy from my dealership just called me back. Said he talked to the techline and they are aware but they still aren't sure if they're going to replace the radio's or reflash. Sounds to me like whoever my dealer talked to doesnt have all the latest news, lol. He also said that the main guy at mazda that handles this will be out until wednesday of next week. I think I'll just start making a weekly call to my dealer until they can get me taken care of. I'll let you guys know when i'm fixed.

Bose.. cut out BS..

Hey All..

I am so friggen glad I found this forum.. I thought I was going insane with the base mids cutting in and out.. levels going up and down when driving even with ALC OFF!!!.. This was insanely helpful.. I'm in canada and MAzda Canada claims to know s***.. I went to my dealer ship.. quoted this forum to service guy who said.. well we'll see what we can do.. I also went and bitched to my sales guy.. and then the receptionist.. who said hey there is a regional rep for mazda canada here right now... So with in 5 mins I was talking with this.. guy.. I stayed calm gave him the this Forum link.. and talked the issue through with him.. he seemed like pretty good guy.. While he said he hadn't heard of the issue yet.. he also said he wasn't responsible for the services side of things his area was sales.. I watched him type an email the the canadian regional manager and several others at corporate mazda.. In his email he quotes this forum as a link and also my vin number and the issues I stated.. He said that if anybody at corporate mazda(canada) would have heard of it it would be this guy he was emailing.. I also phoned mazda canada to register my official compaint.. and my car is ready to go in to be checked out to determine if there is a problem next friday.. I will keep you all posted.

Aaron Williamson..
P.S. I was also smart enough to get a business card from the guy who represents southwestern ontario mazda sales.. so if no resolution through the dealership we can contact him directly..

Thanks to all who posted previously you guys helped me so much.. I'm sure I'll get resolution.. I'm a dog with a bone now..

Can the guy who got his system replaced please post his dealer and phone number for the dealership so we can use it as a reference on our dealreship issues.

I'm with Aaron....I'd like to say thanks to all on this forum for exposing this issue.....i have owned my Mazda3 for about a week now and within minutes i could tell there was something wrong with the bose stereo.......i had an email conversation with the dealership during the past few days and today they looked at my car and ordered a new HU to be installed as soon as the new HU arrives......i will keep you updated......

Warning.. Warning... pontificating ahead... ;)

Here are some thoughts on this. My Service Manager was saying how this came up so quickly - just weeks into the 2008.5 deliveries.

I responded that Mazda (and all companies, really...) don't seem aware of the power of the Internet to quickly disseminate information such as this. Their quality control systems and problem reporting systems might take weeks or months to see a problem like this develop and then take more months to decide on a strategy. But interested people use the Internet to connect and share information instantaneously. In addition, with dozens and dozens of people experiencing the same issue (such as our stereo problem), revealing manufacturing flaws such is also nearly instantaneous.

This kind of forum, which lets us quickly share our experiences with many like-interested people, allows all of us to exert much greater pressure, much more quickly, to resolve such issues. If we were all just going by ourselves to our dealers, I suspect none of us would get *any* sympathy! But when dozens (hundreds?) of people complain together we make a real impact. And being able to point to a forum such as this is just so much more ammunition.

We haven't resolved this issue yet (notice I *didn't* say "won this battle", since Mazda hasn't yet made us have to "fight" with them...), but if we *do* manage to have the problem fixed it will be in no small part due to the effectiveness of many people acting together and the power of a forum such as this.

To sum up this little sermon.... Thanks to those whose efforts create this forum!

P.S. I can't believe that big corporations like Mazda/Ford, etc. don't hire a few people to monitor forums/newsgroups on their products - can you think of a cheaper way to get critical, powerful feedback in record time?

UPDATE My dealership is ordering a new headunit as well once it is in and installed I will let you all know how mine sounds and if its fixed. Thanks guys

I would be fine with a reflash, but it shouldn't take them long @ all to do this. Just post a file on the bose website and owners could burn the cd themselves, Flashing is no big deal. Heck have the dealer do it I don't care. But don't sit on any information, and release no TSB. My dealer service dept supposedly knows nothing about this issue. Apparently mine is the first one brought to their attention. I just got the car 4/16 and it's already pissing me off to some extent. Not enough to get me out of the car, but annoying for damned sure.

Yeah that's what I don't understand. I mean it would save Mazda a ton of time and money to post the download for u to do and it would save us time wasted at the dealer. It's a win-win situation.
