Project Pay2Play: My Eunos Cosmo has arrived!

Thanks guys...Yeah...The pro audio guy did a great job maintaining the factory look while at the same time incorperating the navi system in such a way that insured full functionality...The viewing angle is really nice and there is just enough clearence for the face to pop up and tilt or open.

One of the tough points was making space for the navi unit...The EC dash has very little backspace for the radio etc...but by relocating the climate control system below the navi and fabricating a custom mounting system...The pro audio dude was able achieve a factory look.

Not a bad result considering we only met two times and my Japanese isn't that great and this dude spoke almost 0 English...:D

which unit did you go with?

vie-x075-b1.jpg

Alpine VIE-X075 B1 (minus the digital tuner that makes the B4 model which costs a few hundred bucks extra...Not worth it imo because I don't plan on watching much TV...digital or not while driving...although I could always upgrade in the future I assume).

I was able to mess around with it a bit yesterday and it's very cool...It does so many things that the manual is like a mini-encyclopedia. I'm going to head back next week to get a bit of a "tutorial" on how to use it and to setup all the EQ settings etc...Keep in mind...everything is in Japanese!

It also has some cool options...You can hook up front and rear-view mini-cams and monitor everything through the navi unit...to assist with parking.

I bet most mazda dealers wish they had a garage like that too ;)

I wish I HAD a garage period...lol

Hello from Australia...again....

I drive an ECCS (silver).

I found this forum through the post on the team eunos group on facebook. the Cosmo photos there are of my baby.

So my question is : your body kit is that stock? I want it!

I'm in Canberra Australia and have a great rotary specialist mechanic who has worked on the Cosmo before. So I take it there whenever there is any work to be done. So far the alternator bearings needed replacing.

Try to keep your alternator going as from what I have read, they were unique to the Cosmo and are impossible to get replaced.

Apart from that, I have a pod filter ( I could not find any stock filter replacements and the stock was one filthy) and I change the oil and filter every 5000km (I don't ever skip this part!). I have kept an eye on the oil level and between changes it has never dipped low.

I just rememberd, War20B fixed the drivers side window when I first go the Cosmo.

So far I have done about 17,000km in about the year and a bit that I have had the Cosmo. It is an awesome drive, having cruised to and from Sydney a few times and a few times to Melbourne I can say that on the freeway, the Cosmo is king :)

You have to be careful of overtaking other cars though. It is not hard to rocket past the speed limit and then some more.. and more and more.

Fuel economy is not too bad. Well relative to a Mazda 2 I am sure it is horrible. But compared to Skylines is it just as good if not better in stock form.

I have not really modified the Cosmo as I just changed rego over (and for compliance I left everything stock). I have replaced the speakers and installed an amp. The next thing on my list is a custom exhaust and new paint (my paint is in need of some repair). It was also dynoed at 192.3kw at the wheels.

For some reason there are many Cosmo's in Australia. There are 7 or 8 in Canberra alone (half of which are on the road and the other half are race cars). Also check out the TeamEunos website and forums, there is heaps of info there.

Anyway, excellent choice of car and it looks like it is in great shape. It is good to see another Cosmo on the road. Keep up the great work!

Oh and I want to see some driving vids too :)

Hello from Australia...again....

Welcome to Mazdas247.com (hi)

I drive an ECCS (silver).

Cool..Nice EC!

I've got a question for you...I like your rims...are they the same as DMRH? I really dig the dip-dish action on the rears (thumb)

So my question is : your body kit is that stock? I want it!

I believe mine was a factory option from Mazda available through Eunos/Mazda Dealers at the time.

I'm in Canberra Australia and have a great rotary specialist mechanic who has worked on the Cosmo before. So I take it there whenever there is any work to be done. So far the alternator bearings needed replacing.

Your lucky...I've got a similar situation here in Japan...I live a 5min walk from a Mazda dealer that specializes in rotaries & Mazda performance parts. I've become friends with one of the mechanics there that has a lot of experience with Cosmos and knows them like the back of his hand.

Too bad a lot of Cosmos are mistreated or left for dead (after the 20B is removed) :(

Try to keep your alternator going as from what I have read, they were unique to the Cosmo and are impossible to get replaced.

Thanks for the heads up...I haven't heard that...I'll have to double check with my friend and see if that is the case here in Japan.

Apart from that, I have a pod filter ( I could not find any stock filter replacements and the stock was one filthy) and I change the oil and filter every 5000km (I don't ever skip this part!). I have kept an eye on the oil level and between changes it has never dipped low.

Yeah...Depsite a lot of negative hype about rotaries...I believe the 20B can be very reliable if you just stick to a normal maintenance routine...changing oil & filter every 3000-5000km and checking the condition of all the crucial systems at the same interval...plus keeping your spark plugs clean ;)

Everytime my Cosmo is at the Dealer for anything...I tell them to do a full systems & fluids check...I want my ride in top condition 247 :D

War20B = DMRH right? :)

Fuel economy is not too bad. Well relative to a Mazda 2 I am sure it is horrible. But compared to Skylines is it just as good if not better in stock form.

(werd)...I agree...It's not worse than anyother high-powered car...especially if you lay into them...Rotaries are like race engines for the street...Bottomline...If you want to PLAY...you've got to PAY! ;)

The previous owner put on a Mazdaspeed exhaust which I think sounds freakin awesome but I might go with a full custom one including the downpipe in the future...What sort of custom exhaust are you going to install? Mandrels bends? 3inch? Including the down-pipe? Keep me updated!

If your Cosmo is basically stock...192.3kw sounds healthy especially if you have high miles/Km...I'm curious to how much power mine is putting down...I know the engine is healthy, the problem is there aren't many dyno shops in Japan and I bet it will be really pricey...One of these days :D

For some reason there are many Cosmo's in Australia. There are 7 or 8 in Canberra alone (half of which are on the road and the other half are race cars). Also check out the TeamEunos website and forums, there is heaps of info there.

Oh and I want to see some driving vids too :)

Although there are more Cosmos in Japan...There are probably more enthusiastic owners in Australia...Everyone is FD/13B or RX-8 crazy in Japan...These days Cosmos are a super super rare site!

Thanks for the props and for checking out my thread...It's great to know there are people out there who feel the same way I do about the Eunos Cosmo!

I've already got the TeamEunos website bookmarked...it's a great resource for all EC fans...Keep us updated here on your Cosmo and I'll work on those driving vids :D

Welcome to Mazdas247.com (hi)

I think so.

War20B = DMRH right? :)

Correct

The ECCS has a 190km/h speed limit. It takes about 20 seconds to get there and yes we do have some race tracks. So if you are a member of a club there is often regular track days. At which time you take your car to the track, pay a fee (to play) and drive as fast as you want. From what I have read, there is a speed limit and once that is removed it will hit the rev limit at 260km/h.

I'm not going to bother getting that speed limit removed as I would not often use that speed. The freeways around here have a 110km/h speed limit. Canberra to Melbourne is around 700km, depending on where in melbourne you need to go. It normally takes about 7 hours. 2 drivers and a stop for some dinner/lunch.

However, it is MUCH more fun to drive over the mountains. a bit longer and takes around 9 hours. Bendy roads with a great view.

Driving from Canberra to Sydney can be just as much fun, with many coastal mountain roads to enjoy.

The previous owner put on a Mazdaspeed exhaust which I think sounds freakin awesome but I might go with a full custom one including the downpipe in the future...What sort of custom exhaust are you going to install? Mandrels bends? 3inch? Including the down-pipe? Keep me updated!

Well, I don't know yet, downpipes and whatnot sure. Size and all that, well I will let you know when I get it done.

Mate. I really dig your Type-SX with that Navi fitted. Although its the Momo that keeps catching my eye. have been eyeing off a few wheels to enhance the interior further on mine & something like your Momo may just do the job.

Did I notice your SX having just 35k km on the clock....? No wonder it looks in such good condition. Is the engine still original. I'm betting it is as the D-series engines (on all the Series-II's) where well built & reliable.

For the record, I think mine is clocking 44k km now. Imported it into Oz with 24k km (genuine) on the clock

Wow! Looks like you getting the Cosmo has broght a few other Cosmo owners to the forum. Soon you will have to make a section in the forum for them. lol

LOOKS awesome. I really like this car, never heard of it till you bought one actually. Only thing that I don't approve is the wood grain interior. Never been a fan. Brushed aluminum FTW IMO. But to each their own. Navi looks hot too. props for getting something very original.

Getting over 300 whilst possible might be scary with no ground effects wings or spoilers like an RX-7. I've taken mine to 250km/h on the open freeways & whilst it can do more, I'll admit I lack the balls to continue fearing a radar trap over the next hill will get me (Call me paranoid)......... (eekdance)

Get a Valentine One :)

didn't get to read over the whole thread yet but man your car is amazing i'd hear a lot about these but never really got to see them. my friend spoke very highly of them and with some reverance now i know why

I think so.

Thanks for the additional info...The speedo only goes up to 180km/h...Now that I've got the navi...I can confirm my actual speed via GPS (provided it's accurate).

I enjoy both highway and mountain driving...Japan has routes with both tight-bends and somewhat stretched-out mild bends...I plan on trying out both but I have a feeling that taking the Cosmo on tight mountain twisties would really tax the stock brakes...but with some suspension upgrades and good brakes...I think the Cosmo should have no problem handling the twisties (thumb)

Got any Cosmo road-trip pics??? (thumb)

Mate. I really dig your Type-SX with that Navi fitted. Although its the Momo that keeps catching my eye. have been eyeing off a few wheels to enhance the interior further on mine & something like your Momo may just do the job.

Thanks! Yeah...You seem to be quite the fan of that Momo steering wheel :D...Did you check if Momo still carried that wheel or something similar?

Did I notice your SX having just 35k km on the clock....? No wonder it looks in such good condition. Is the engine still original. I'm betting it is as the D-series engines (on all the Series-II's) where well built & reliable.

Good eye ;) When I started to search for Cosmos...I quickly realized that A. I wanted one in GOOD condition + B. I wanted one with low miles...Even in Japan...It was difficult to track down decent examples as most have been used & abused by now :(

Yup...The engine is original and it's a D-series...I recall reading one of your posts somewhere about how the 20Bs were made in batches and that later batches were built a bit tougher which I was happy to know :D

For the record, I think mine is clocking 44k km now. Imported it into Oz with 24k km (genuine) on the clock

Yeah...Too bad your RX-8 gets all the luv now :p On the plus side...You can enjoy the 8 on a daily basis while "preserving" your Cosmo (thumb)

Mine is definitely a "weekend" ride...(drive)

Wow! Looks like you getting the Cosmo has broght a few other Cosmo owners to the forum. Soon you will have to make a section in the forum for them. lol

Haha...Yeah...I've noticed...LOOK OUT...Cosmo owners unite!...Well...The handful that exist...lol

not that you'll ever use any of the maps i've made since you live in japan and i only work on the US ones but if you ever do use the US ones you might end up using a map i built or fixed :) i work for one of Alpines main suppliers for GPS maps. love the unit by the way and it looks great in there!

Thanks for the props...although I'm a fan of brushed aluminum...I like the wood accent in the Cosmo...it's very minimal but it gives the car a touch of luxury and makes it feel a bit more "natural" than brushed aluminum...Leave the "metallic" interior look for the German cars ;)

didn't get to read over the whole thread yet but man your car is amazing i'd hear a lot about these but never really got to see them. my friend spoke very highly of them and with some reverance now i know why

Mucho Gracias for the positive feedback :D I believe when the Cosmo came out it was one of the most powerful and fastest "JDM" cars at the time...especially in the high-end coupe/luxury market...Figure 3 rotors...two turbos, rwd and mid to high 13's in the 1/4 mile BONE STOCK...and you can see why the Cosmo was certainly no slouch back then and even today.

not that you'll ever use any of the maps i've made since you live in japan and i only work on the US ones but if you ever do use the US ones you might end up using a map i built or fixed :) i work for one of Alpines main suppliers for GPS maps. love the unit by the way and it looks great in there!

(cool)...Good to know...I'll keep that in mind when I visit back home...and get lost in the desert somewhere...lol :D

Yeah...I chose the Alpine because it seemed like the most attractive package to me...Nice looking unit...Great sound...fun multimedia setup...great screen and navi capabilities! (first)

i didn't realize that thing has as many capabilities as it does, i just got my first nav system but it is just a pda / gps system i'm holding out for the nicer unit after my car is one the road, and i get a sweet discount on the unit once a year so i'm saving up so i can get the full monty when i do it :) and def let me know when you are in the states maybe i can help with getting updated maps, no promises still working on what i'm allowed to do

Time to update the "plan"...

Man...So I finally got to drive the Cosmo again after about 3 weeks or so of no action...and it felt AWESOME! The car is running better than ever and I'm definitely becoming more comfortable with the Cosmo in general.

I felt so at home in it...cruising around after leaving the dealer...I was grinning like a kid in a candy store non-stop and the new navi setup just made the whole experience that much sweeter!

I'm reminded once again why I bought this car instead of a new car...IMO it's in a league of its own...Even though I've been driving it for a few months now...I feel like the more I drive it...The more time I spend with it...The more rewarding it becomes...the more connected it becomes...Despite its size and luxury appeal...The Cosmo felt amazingly nimble and controllable on my most recent cruise...and all I can say about the power is...

Give me 3 rotors and two turbos any DAY! (woowoo) (rockon)

I'm right there with ya bro. In fact I would have considered a Cosmo myself if they were available here.

Those backlit Cosmo signs look freaky on the car at night. Strangley though I have never seen them on both sides of the car. Its a Japanese thing I think like the badge on the left side only.

Good luck finding them, They have been NLA for 10 years.

Having said that. I think I have one floating around. If you can find one, I may be able to provide the other.

On another note, If you exceed 1-Bar of boost. You will kill the turbo's & the engine wont enjoy the shattered turbo blades going through it.

Having said that BNR turbo's in the USA will hi-flow the factory turbo's to tolerate up to 1.2-Bar. Then the engine will be able to provide a healthy 400KW without turbo destruction.
