Auto Mode: A/C all the Time?

I'm kind of starting to like the "Auto" Climate control - and I know that the A/C indicator is on all the time with it. Now I know the manual makes mention that the A/C won't be on in spite of the indicator IF it's below 32 degrees F. But what about above that temperature? Am I wasting gas on say - a 55 degree day? If that's the case, I'd sooner set it to manual and take in the cold air - but I'd have to think the engineers are smarter than that - no?

I also noticed that in Auto Mode - it seems to like to start in the defroster mode - which I think for sure is using the A/C. Any thoughts on that too?

Thanks in advance for sharing your thoughts.

Here in sunny California, I notice that with Aut Climate control, at a given temperature setting (68 degrees), it modulates the duration between AC on (to cool off) and AC off (keep constant temp). It was odd at first to feel alternating cold air then ambient breeze from the front vents. Surprisingly, the rear cold air vent always have cold air if AC is on.

If the day is cold, I set auto climate with AC off. The setting is persistant even after restarting the car.

Thugus.
