400 miles on MS 3

Totalled a 05 GTO on 2-15-08. Shopped and drove a lot of cars, GTI, Bullit, WRX, etc. First drive in MS 3 was enough, lots of bang for your buck. Got an 08 Metro Gray, out the door for $23,500. First drive, started attracting "racers". Two Mustang GT's, and a WRX. The Mazda is surpriseingly fast. It's also smooth, quiet, comfortable, and well put together. After reading lots of internet posts, installed a Mazdaspeed CAI, $336.00 from the dealer. It works fine, noticeable HP/Torque gain, lag time reduced and it boosts really fast. Aluminum shield rattles at 3000 RPM to 6000. Haven't figured out a way to stop that, and it's annoying. At 300 miles, dumped factory oil and filter, changed to Mobil 1 [0-40] synthetic. Small, but noticible gain in HP, and it's very high quality oil. This car could use a better shifter, maybe I'll try the Mazdaspeed shifter kit. Stock exhaust is quiet and seems to flow really well. Other than the rattle, and the shifter, I'm pleased with this car. So far, 18mpg with 91 octane Chevron.

Welcome to the forum and congrats on your MS3! I also had an 05 GTO that I ended up getting rid of about a year ago.

MS3 is going to my option for alot of your same reasons. I'm still trying to understand what oil i'm going to use and when i'm going to change it. I plan on keeping the car so I want to make sure I do it right. I always have changed oil within 1000 miles in the very beginning, then again at 3000 miles. Never owned a turbo car though, so i'm going to be searching and reading through alot of threads.

Mazdaspeed shifter kit is for the 5spd 3's, mazda doesnt make one for the ms3 (6spd).
I have the TWM but it doesnt change the quality of the shift stroke, just makes it smaller.

Congrats on the purchase.

I too would like to see pictures!

Get a new motor mount if you want better shifting- Only $100 or less depending on which one you get.

Mobil 1 synthetic reduces friction enough to give a 5-10 hp gain, maybe more. I've dyno'd GM V-8's and gotten 25 hp. It also is very good for turbo motors with high RPM and lots of heat. It holds up really well, and I'll go 5000 miles before changing oil. I live in So. Calif. and it's hot here, so I use [0-40]. If I lived in Chicago, I'd use [0-30], for a colder climate.
The aluminum shield is fastened everywhere, all rubber bushings in place, but it's thin sheet and at 3000 rpm, it starts rattling like crazy. I'll have to drill holes, run some rubber tubing around the edges, and snap-tie them on.
I'd like to know which motor mounts, exactly, calm down vibration/movement enough to improve shifting???
This car handles like my 88 CRX-si. When I wear out the stock Bridgestones, I'll switch to some sticky 225-40-18's, and really have some fun, Toyo or Yokohama probably.

That's all I've ever had is Mobil 1 synthetic in both the GTO and my TBSS. Haven't had any problems, but I don't do enough "work" on them in the past to know the difference. To my ignorance, oil has always been oil and i've always changed it at 3,000, with Mobil 1 I stretch it out to 5,000.

This picture might show why the aluminum shield rattles so much. It's not supported on the sides, just front & rear. Got to have a way to dampen out the high rpm rattle.
