i think i miscommunicated what i meant. the reason why i would choose the re-01r's is because they give a remarkably comfortable ride for being extreme performance summers. the direzzas are better for raw performance, but ride comfort and tire noise is still very important to me, since this is my DD, and i will be using these tires basically full time! =d

This is my worry with those tires. I will be buying new tires and I really want the 615's but I dont feel like replacing them every summer. I hear they suck in the rain too, can anybody confirm that?
I never heared they sucked in rain at all, read reviews, there so soft i can't imagine they would suck in rain. Yeah the wear rating is terrible. But I believe its better then our stock 140 Tire Wear Rating(I think its 200). I figure if they spin less and grip more, they wear less. This car needs soft, short lasting tires!! I'll be happy to get 15k out of each set of tires on this car, 20k be wonderful, I am happy with the stock bridgstones handling and such its just they melt away pretty fast and I want to go 225/45/18.

Yokohama AVS ES100 - superb in dry, excellent in wet. If/when I go to new tires, I will get these again. Put them on my P5 when I needed new tires and they were great...hopefully I sell my stock MS3 wheels and tires so I can get some rims and wrap em with AVS ES 100's. But I am so confused with all these wheel threads: size to go with? then tire size? I read one thread, thinking I understand then I read another which confuses me. I need HELP!!!
edgeracing.com sells Falken FK452's for $119 apiece (235/40), how can you beat that!
A friend has recommended Nitto NeoGens ($140 from Discount), Yokohama Parada Spec2s (correct sizing apparently not available), and I found the Yoko AVS ES100 for $279 on one site! Neither TireRack nor Discount offer the ES100 in a 235/40.
I believe the OP mentioned he didn't want to go with a wider tire, so I apologize that some of my info may be irrelevant!
For those of us looking to upsize for traction purposes though, it seems the Fk452 is the best bargain?

I never said that. I made a comment that it would break my heart to be "forced" to go bigger because the options for stock size seem to be limited. My only problem with going bigger is coming up with money for wider rims, because it appears that the closest to factory diameter (minimal screwing up of the speedometer) is 235/40/18. I don't think the factory rim is wide enough to get full benefit of a tire that wide (if they will mount).
Believe me, all the feedback is appreciated.
Hey Mid Life- Here's all you need to know, you know the MazdaSpeed3 Accessorized that SCC tested, well MazdaSpeed offers an upgraded Coil-over Suspension and rims and when you go with those rims you get 225/40/18 on the same size 18x7 inch rim we all have stock so, If mazda does that there I can't see why you can't go 225/40/18 on your stock rims. For my next set I am going to go either 225/45/18 or the optional mazda tire size of 225/40/18. For traction issues abound in this car, we need sticky tires and as far as I'm concerned living in Florida, I'm going all out and going with Falken Rt-615s. There the tire all the drift teams run and allot of autox guys also. pretty much one of the stickiest street tires that should do well in the rain, I say should as I've never tried em but there definitely my next tire for the Speed3. I've seen them online for as low as $600.00 shipped for Falken RT-615's in 225/40/18 and from what I hear there pretty much track abuse ready and still should last 10-20,000 miles depending on how hard you drive.

Thank you. Don't forget that if those tires are factory issued then the speedo is calibrated for them. My issue here (and some would say that I am being too fussy) is that unless my speedo can be recalibrated for the 225/40 tires, it will be off by 2.2%. This means that when the speedo says 60, you are doing 58.7. About one and 1/3rd mile per hour difference. If you go to the 235/40, the speedo is off by 1%, so when it reads 60, you are doing 59.4, or about a half a mile an hour slower. For the sake of speeding tickets, I suppose it is better to be going slower than you think you are, but this means the odo is racking up miles faster than the car really is. I like it as close to reality as I can get it.
Edit: Besides, a set of 235s under this car would look so tuff! (old person speak for cool, which I suppose is actually old person speak for something else now).

235/40/18 on stock rims(Though not recommended by Tire Co's), and Mid I'll bet your speedo is off by more then that now, I wouldn't worry bout it. I actually doubt that mazda even reflashes the tire size difference, its such a small difference. I know with the car totally stock the speedo reads about 1-2 mph high anyway, thats checked by GPS.

Jay, you'll more than likely want a 225/45ZR18. It'll be a better match to the stock wheel's 7.0" width. A 235 should fit on a wheel that narrow you won't be making the best use of the tire's width.

nitto 555's will be going on my ride. i got my new rims sitting in the garage. just waiting for spring to come now !! i will be going 225/45/18's. too wide make your MPG drop, and that tire will also be slightly taller than stock. that will be better for performance and MPG ! nitto tires have always been great for me. they perform well and usually last longer than other brands. the 555 is a great street tire and still has a 300 treadwear rating.....the stock POS bridgestones is like 140 i think.

I have been driving daily on the stock tires at temps well into the negative digits (as low as -25F), with no problems. As long as there is no glare ice, the tires are fine. You can't drive at 10 10ths at low temps, but you can still drive. The electronics help out a bunch. Yes, the car is even driven out onto lakes for ice fishing outings. No problems. Plus, i can do 5th gear burnouts at 70 mph on the freeway! lol! Seriously.
