satin paint.

yeah, i can see a flat black car showing more flaws but i think a satin silver would be pretty much the same as sunlight silver as far as maintenance... there are also paint company's that make clear coats and paints for this specific finish... i'm not sure if those clears are as strong as glossy clears of if they just have a flattening agent in them like a shop would mix it. it's called BASF and the civic Si, the rsx-s and the STI all used that paint.

i have actually been thinking about doing the same. I want to do my ms3 in flat black

surprisingly difficult effect to replicate... but here's what I got

I remember seeing this flat blue STi at Agile Automotive back when they were still in Baltimore. I didn't like at first, but the more I looked at it the more I liked it.

i agree, it might de-value the car a bit but i wouldn't consider it 'blowing money'. i'm not leasing the car. i'm making payments because i plan on keeping it. and for the people that don't know anything about satin paint: it's the exact same thing as any other paint job. you can wash it just like normal. the clear coat has a flattening agent in it to give it that look. if getting a car proffesionally painted devalues the car by several thousand dollars, i wonder what a carbon fiber hood, carbon fiber front lip will do to it.

I'm not leasing my car either, but as it turns out, my car is going back anyway. Why? Can't make the payments with a devastating turn of events in my life. This CAN happen to anyone, and with our economy in the peril it is in, you've got to pay heed to that. If you paint your car satin, AND you have to end up getting it repossessed (truly worst-case scenario, but it COULD happen just like its happening to me), then your car will be worth about NOTHING on the auction block. Nobody there will actually want to own it, because it didn't come stock that way. Come on, you know the rules. You modify a bought-and-paid-for-in-full car this way because you can, but a car you're making payments on....its not really yours until you make the last payment. This is True.

Now, if this were a $2000-$3000 project car (like my Supras were), hell I'd be all over it with you. I thought a flat/satin black paint job on my 91 Supra would look killer, I just never got around to doing it.

do it! i checked out that flat black bmw. only one word comes to mind... 'sex'

i actually got the idea from some show on speed where they did a mini in flat black. ive just got to look into the washability and stuff of the flat.

i see... so you don't mind the look, you just are concerned about the money part of it? as weird as it sounds, i'm not concerned about it. i don't have my own house so a car payment and insurance is an easy payment while i'm going to school. i don't think my car will get reposessed, and if it does... everything happens for a reason. still not sure if i'll get it painted satin silver yet. i'm actually scared to get any paintwork done because stupid kids around here LOVE to vandalize cars and i don't have a garage for mine... i might see if the body shop can respray my door that was egged and see if they can match it well enough. i've had the car less than a year...

yeah, i know it would be hard to get it to show up on a picture. i really appreciate the effort! looks about as good as anyone else could do it i'm sure. thanks again!

yea if I had a few hours to spend tweaking it, there are a lot of things I'd try to clean up, but unfortunately I don't ;)

Oh, thought I'd mention, that as far as egging, or any other kind of contaminant on the paint, you can use Zaino polishes which will render most of those attacks useless. I had a few of those "incidents", and each time my Zaino-coated cars were immune to damage.

Something to consider.

Also, I never thought in my lifetime that I'd have a car repossessed, but fate plays strange tricks on you. And if this is happening for a reason, whoever reason it is, I want to KILL them. I don't own a house, BTW, I rent. Still, its happening. I'm just saying, try not to do something that devalues the car (in the eyes of the average consumer, not the money-stripped kid who digs the way you modified your car) until its paid for in full.

You think someone who painted a Mercedes like that is making payments? Think again.

Satin Paint

I think the satin paint looks good on some applications. It's your money, and your car, so ultimately it comes down to your decision. I would keep in mind, however, that all of the cars that you presented in your examples are double to triple the value of your car(not to put down the 3)so the panels are in pristine condition before painting. They are also painted at the factory that way, so unless you are ready to completely break down your 3 and clean off all layers of paint, primer, and clear to the bare metal, you might rethink it. If, though, you know a really really good paint and body work guy, I think it would look good on your 3. I'm not trying to sound negative in any way, but if you put that much time, money, and effort into a paint job, you don't want to find all of this out after it's done. Good luck with it!

the only car that was painted at the factory that way was the ferrari. none of the others were. that being said... how would they paint the car when insurance pays for it? they don't sand the whole car down to metal. the civic Si, the Acura rsx-s, the STI weren't, i know for sure.

Zaino will be no help to an egg attack.
The damage isn't typically done from the Gooey goodness of the egg, but rather the Shell as it cracks and breaks against your paint typically gouges out chunks and chips whic can't be fixed by any other means but bodywork and paint.

So even if the egg wasn't spotted and it etched the paint...It really doesn't matter..Because if it is..there is still Physical damage that can not be stopped from the shell itself.

Just some personal knowledge FYI

correct. i know because my car was egged. lol. those eggshells jack paint up pretty easily. what do you think forcefed? do you think i could get the paint matched up? i know silver's pretty hard and my car will be a year old in march. 7,800 miles on her.

A good body shop will have no problem fixing you up.
Silver isn't "that" hard..but its also not The easiest.
I think any true enthusiest will know where there car has been painted and where it hasn't...the trick is making sure no one else can spot it.
(wink)

I will be doing my entire car in flat black once I get the urge. Maybe this summer, maybe next spring.. Anytime you get the full car painted it is BIG $$.. So next time I find a 4-7k laying around ill get to it. Might not be for a little while. I have a few "other" things to do with it first
