I was thinking about doing the Cobb SRI but my father pointed out that it isnt carb legal in CA and the cops around here are getting pretty smart about whats what, so I was wondering if anybody knows of any legal SRI/CAI I couldshould get? I was also looking at the Injen or the MS CAI..... how many people have used these and can tell me which one will give me more pull/HP/etc.....??

Cobb is pending CARB approval. By the time you need to smog it, it will be approved, so dont worry about it.

A little insight, unless you are stopped by a CHP unit in a blue jumpsuit, no cop can have you open the hood and inspect your engine. The only cops in CA who have ASE/DOT certification are the CHP. Dont worry about it.

I've got MS cold air and meets standards in NY. Sorry don't know performance gains as installed before delivery. But she does run well. Mazda brochure should will say CARB exempt or status. Boy Cali is really getting strict. Maybe you guys should drive those Teslas. Automobile mag March.

i was told by the parts dealer in escondido, that the MS intakes are made by AEM. therefore the are or are pending carb legality.

i highly recommend investing $0.50 in a Mazdaspeed sticker for the Cobb SRI! (alright)

Well if youre going to go with an Access Port down the road from Cobb, buy the SRI, its cheaper. It gives more torque over the MSCAI but the MSCAI makes more horsepower. The difference is negligible in all reality but the Cobb does have an airfoil inside to straighten the incoming air before it hits the MAF Meter. This helps the car from seeing lean conditions due to turbulent airflow from the bend of the MSCAI.

Well apperantly there is no kind of CARB pending notification on Cobb's webpage - in fact it stil says "not intended for use on public streets" or whatever. Guess I will be going with the Injen.

CAI's are so easy to install, just pull it off if you need to get smogged or something. Do you really think a cop is gonna make you pop your hood? what other mods do you have that a cop might suspect you have illegal mods?

None, yet, but Ive known enough people who HAVE had it happen to them that I would rather not risk it. Kid in a little red car that goes fast......

cobb mentioned it in one of their posts... problem is, CARB certification is expensive

WEll f2cars (who will get my speed3, and my bros speed6) is making or working on making all his intakes CARB lregal, scion, n/a and turbo mazda3 and 6, fusion, focus. and he is in so cal and 35-45 minutes form pendlton.

I had ran my escort got years with a home made and partially bought intake kit, adn exaust, way lowered (tucked rim) and was never pulled over and poped the hood in 5 years. and i drove it all the time like i stoll it. (now with the speed, drive normal is the same).

MS CAI has a CARB sticker on it. Difference in power is like 1 hp and 1 tq LOL. I don't think its that noticable, although tv CAI gives you that kool squirming vortex sound. If you get pulled over just do what I do, flash your badge LOL. Happy motoring.

I vote for the MS CAI...and about power gains, I don't know what other people are smoking, but the MS CAI really makes a HUGE difference in power. The install of my MS CAI turned my car into a beast!!!

Now, I can't compare to other intakes...all I know is my experience/gains with the MS CAI...

Its fact that the MS CAI (or any other I guess) is the best power mod you can do. Not even a DP comes close to it... MS CAI is legal...

My 0.02 cents.

I love the look on people's faces when they thought it was just another mazda hatchback.(wiggle)

Especially the porsche carreras and the arrogant bmws ha I thought the porsche guy was gonna cry when i had a fender on him at 145.

I read a fair bit about the car before buying and mscai looked pretty good. A cold air has the advantage over sri units. It's in the name, cold air.
