I mean do I have to remove screws for that cover.....
because on the install manu ..... they only tell us to remove it... didn't say any screw... and didn't say how to remove iit..... I'm kind of worry about to break anything...... really pls help!!

Thanks!
Mark

Not a problem Mark, here is how you do it.

First remove the shifter knob by unscrewing if off of the shifter, turn it counterclockwise.

then you need to remove the piece that goes around the Emergency brake handle, do so by sticking a few fingers in the slit and just gently pull it off, it just snaps on.

Now you need to remove the cupholders and the trip piece that goes around the shifter, just flip up the little door that covers the cupholders, grab a hold of them and gently pull back, that whole piece will also just pop out as it only has snaps holding it in as well.

NOW, if you will look at the console where you removed the trim piece for the Emergency brake you will see two screws holding the console to the floor, remove those two screws.

Up near the dashboard, down on the sides of the console you will see TWO buttons...one on each side. CAREFULLY pop those buttons off and you will find another screw under each of them, remove these two screws.

NOW, move both of the front seats as far forward as they will go, and look at the sides of the console near the rear and you will find two more screws..one on each side, remove those two screws....

that is a total of 6 (six) screws. NOW your console is loose and ready to remove. put the shifter in the 2nd or 4th gear position as it makes removine the console a little easier, just lift it out and back slowly and not everything you need to get at is exposed.

you are now ready to replace your shifter with nothing in your way.

:D just reverse these directions to replace the console.

Thanks!

Mark...you need to push the shifter DOWN farther into the housing...IF properly installed all the way in the original O-ring and the Snap Ring fit just fine...

so....you MAY need to crawl back under the car and disconect the shift linkage....if you got it all hooked back up....and pull the shifter back out the top....put MORE grease on it and put it back in again....it will fit....and if you are not getting it bottomed out so that the oring and snap ring will go back in with no problem....then the shifter is not bottomed out like it should be. but whatever you do....do NOT hit it with a happer or anything like that.....it should go in with the force of you pushing it down.

I didn't hit it.... but really.... I can't put it in any more further with my whole body push it...... do you suggest that I should reinstall it again....? I know it didn't seem good.... but the shifter is working fine now.... anyway... I need to drive back to home first and install it again.....!!!!

SirNuke

You installed the B&M Short Shifter.

Is it really worth the $145 from Protege5Online

I mean, does it REALLY shorten the throw between gears?

I don't mean to sound stupid but I just want to know before shelling out the cash.

By the way. I posted this thread:
http://forum.protegemp3.com/vbb225/showthread.php?s=&threadid=4095

After reading it and checking out the pics Miss "I don't want springs" said to go for it! Woo-Hoo

I actually caught her the other day. I went into her office and she on Eibachs' Site .

That was pretty funny.

YES, if you didn't get it all the way down so that the original oring and snap ring reinstalled...you need to take it out and lube it up MORE and reinstall it....

I have had the B&M in for a while....and IMO, worth every dime....its very well built, and YES it does in fact shorten the throw between gears.....I would highly recommend this shifter over any of the other.

:D

Cool

Thanks for your honesty SirNuke.

I saw the pics you posted. The fit and finish of the shifter looks really good.

all that is holding it in is the orings...they are really tight...just make sure you pull it STRAIGHT out...and do it slowly......then put MORE lube on it...and stick it back in.....the problem I believe you had in the first place is not enough lube...it dosn't hurt to put a little on your fingers and make sure the bore of the shifter housing is all slick as well.

markleung, I swore for the life of me that the ring would never snap in completely, but eventually it clicked in perfectly. I just pushed it around the edge of the "O" until it was in nice and snug. It had less to do with brute force and more to do with finessing it in. Treat it like a woman you love. Stupid question: do you have the right tools? Without it the process can be a b****.

...and hell yes, every day the shifter feels better and better.

Good Point Dome....
Mark. do you in fact have a pair of snap ring pliers? if not, get some...you can buy a pair that will work just fine for about $6-$8 at an autoparts house. it makes the difference of night and day.

OKAY..., here ya go.....you really can get an inexpensive pair at autoparts stores that will do the job.....just remember....there are three kinds...INTERNAL.....EXTERNAL....AND Combination......I happen to get the COMBO's....and what they do is you can use them for BOTH internal and external snap rings, you NEED INTERNAL snap ring pliers for the shifter mod, OR the combination pliers ....look at the picture...the THUMBSCREW removes and there are TWO holes to use it in...by changeing it from one to the other it converts the pliers from internal to external. the TIPS, the very end of the pliers, the part that sticks into the holes in the snap ring itself need to be about 1/16" in diameter....hope this helps out. when properly assembled for internal snap ring use...when you squeeze the handles they will make the tips get closer together, thus making the ring compress.

Really thanks a lot!

Thank God and SirNuke

I am glad I have been keeping an eye on this post. I was looking at the B&M Shifter myself. At least now I know to get a pair of those pliers before I even start the job.

Sir Nuke..

does the B&M short shifter shift smoother than the stock ones? I mean, even tho the throws are shorter, is it smoother? Cuz on the stock shifter, going from 1st to 2nd is always so stiff.
