Seeing as how we just got attacked by an Apple Spammer.........

Are there any measures being taken to stop this? I mean its a small nuisance but annoying.

Thanks for your concern. This issue has been discussed quite a bit in the past on the open forums, and is certainly the topic of much discussion between the moderators and the administrators. With our recent changeover to the newest version of V-Bulletin, we've adopted the infraction system. One advantage to this system is that it now allows all moderators to issue immediate bans on the premise that the member is clearly a spammer. Due to the fact that spam bots generally will post multiple spam threads (sometimes in upwards of 6) before they are done, this new system has truly helped in getting rid of them as soon as they crop up.

Generally speaking, with all of the moderators and administrators that we have present on the forums, there is usually at least one online at any given time. However, because moderators have control only over their respective sections, threads can not always be deleted immediately though a ban has already been issued. For example, say that it's 12AM and a spam bot posts in the mazda6 section while only a mazda3 mod is online. The mazda 3 mod can issue a ban to prevent the spam bot from continuing, but that thread will stay until the mazda6 mod, a supermoderator, or an aministrator comes online. We have eased this process in the moderator/administrator section by creating a thread where all spammers and their threads are logged. This thread acts as an alert system the moderators (but mostly to the admins) who are capable of deleting them.

It's an annoyance to say the least, but we're doing our best every day. We have thrown around multiple options to try to alleviate the problem (including new member waiting periods, new add-ons), but we feel that making any of these changes would have a negative effect on the registration process and also the experience for new members. This is the last thing we want. Hopefully we'll come up with some new brilliant ideas in the future that won't create problems for new legitimate members, but for now, we're doing our best with what we've got.

The forum that I came from and was a moderator on when I had my Lancer (www.evolutionm,com) they have a 50 post minimum to post in the for sale section. It has been a couple of years since they had a spam problem. Trust me, there was no drop off on people registering on that website.

Ya, I'm the biggest troll over on evom I think lol! We should make that rule about the 50 posts.

The problem with that is the BOTs dont always post in the FS section

So a spam BOT registers as a user and posts a thread? how does it work?

It's pretty easy to do I'm told. Just an automated set of instructions basically.

I thought those "security codes" were supposed to stop that?

Yeah...It did reduce the amount of spam for a while but recently they have picked up the pace again...seems like they just adapted to the verification system vBulletin uses...even though it's set on "most difficult" to decipher.

The good news is that with each vBulletin update we do...There seems to be new and more effective tools and features to combat spam.

Hopefully, the next time we upgrade...There will be more effective spam prevention systems in place.

Hey at least you are trying, and like I said before, they are more of a nuisance than anything else.

Ya, spam bots (and Antoine will laugh at what I'm about to say) and Trev0006 need to GTFO of here!!!!!

:D

trev is alright, he does post some nice vids sometimes, BUT its getting worse theres even porn spams now wth? this is the only forum i've came across with that many spams...

He's a bot controlled by an actual person. The one controlling him posted in your thread. Btw, do you have a link? I remember reading it awhile back, but I forget what it was...

I mentioned it in another thread, but how about also not allowing links in the first few posts. Usually the spam threads have an email link at the bottom or something. Another forum won't let you post links until you have 10 posts. That may help. It's a little hard for a new user to post pics of his car or whatever, but I don't think it's slowed Nasioc down one bit.

At least thats a relative "bot". not a "me love you long time" bot or "buy! buy! buy!" bot

i cant remember the exact link... i know the thread had to do with people dumping brake fluid and acid on the paint of cars....
