spin-on oil filter conversion check in (ms3)

who is using this thing? i have a new ms3 gt on the way and i like the idea of it, but don't want to have any issues. i searched a bit and found very few people using it...

It does not appear to include the oil cooler connections. I believe this will only work for the standard non-MS3 2.3. Someone please post if I am wrong.

i think that is why they offer two different versions...the one pictured is the standard version (i believe)

there is a selection box if you have a ms3 as opposed to an NA 2.3.

How difficult is it to install? Will it impact warranty? What size filter does it take?

I've got it on mine. No issues.

Will not impact warranty as it is a direct mazda OEM replacement part.

I had the dealer install it, but it looked like it wouldn't be too hard if you have the right tools. Some of the stuff might be hard to reach.

It uses the same size filter as the 2006 Mazda Tribute 2.3 does. The tribute uses a spin on filter instead of a cartridge unit.

I bought mine so that I could use Amsoil Absolute Efficiency Filters, they last longer and offer better protection than most of the cartridge filters out there. I also think they're a lot easier to change, but thats just me, I know a lot of people disagree.

It boils down to personal preference in what filters you want to use and whether you think spin on is easier. I think it was well worth the $50. It just saves me a lot of headaches and I can use my most favoritest brand of oil filters.

The cartridge filter is much more ecologically sound. There is less metal to throw away, and you can drain it quite completely so more oil gets recycled. I know some of you don't care, but your children might a few years from now.

Also, it is easy to inspect for metal bits to gauge the health of your engine.

not to challenge your logic because I agree...... but with a cartridge I generally spill more oil and make a mess, lol so thats more oil in the environment

well, if we really cared that much we'd be driving priuses and recycling bath water instead of figuring out how to waste more fuel and make hydrocarbons going nowhere fast with our turbo 4cyls.

the difference is most likely so negligible between cartridge waste and metal cased units, that i'm sure the argument could ideally go either way, but i do applaud you guys who geniunely follow the environmentally better ideal. it's good to be committed to something for the better good.

one angle is if you use spin-off, you don't have to change the filter every change since efficiency nowadays doesn't seem to go down considering the quality of the engine production and the wonderful synthetic oil available. every other change would suffice. whereas with the cartridges you evidently can't do that.

but do i do the skipping thing? no; never have, even though my owner's manuals always told me i could.

as far as metal bits in the engine and inspecting...if this was a high dollar built engine that i am breaking in, then maybe i'd understand that, but a production engine? this isn't 1968, we don't have to worry about reviewing metal content on the filter media hehe. if you really want to see what's doing, you can send a used oil sample away to get analyzed, but i've had several built engines and never worried about what might be hanging out on the media in my filter.

Subarpunk03 - Do you have a Mazdaspeed 3? There is nothing in your sig or profile to verify. If so, do you remember what you paid for parts and what you paid for labor?

Do you first pull the drain plug on the filter? If you do that, there should be no spilling.

Yes I have a speed3.

I bought the conversion kit from protegegarage for like $50, and then the install was like $30 or $40 or something like that.

Its probably pretty easy to install yourself, but I just felt lazy.

to be honest, I don't have the tools or space available to do an oil change in my parking lot at the moment so for the first change I went to the dealership

the only other experience I have with a cartridge filter is with my old jetta vr6 and to the best of my knowledge there was no drain plug by the filter
