2009 Corvette ZR1

I'll look forward to Mallett shoe-horning this into a Solstice. :-)

Based on what they've already done, and what was said about the Corvette engines in the Z06-powered G8 article, I don't think it would take much. Making it usable, on the other hand...

the only downside is that it's probably a $20,000 engine. and you might end up either having a huge hood bulge or a giant hole in the hood to fit that supercharger/intercooler setup

I think they said that the Z06 engine cost $17,000. I'd say closer to $25k for this. Never know, though. I haven't read up on all of the engine technology yet, and slapping on a supercharger should be cheaper than all of the stuff they've done with the LS7.

After the excitement and surprise of the General Motors (slightly early) reveal of the Corvette ZR1 yesterday, we thought we’d take a moment to reflect a bit on the most important part of the car, its engine.

The LS9 can more or less take the title of “Best Small-Block Chevy V-8” right out of the gate. While the current Z06’s LS7 may have scored highest in the naturally aspirated category, and has a greater displacement (7.0-liters vs. 6.2-liters), GM fully expects the LS9 to be more powerful and more reliable.

Built in Wixom, MI before being shipped to Kentucky for assembly, the LS9 has been engineered with durability to go along with its staggering performance. The smaller displacement engine block was chosen in part because the thicker cylinder walls were needed to stand up to the pressures of a high-horsepower, supercharged engine. The LS9’s small-block has been strengthened by 20 percent to help counter these greater loads.

Cylinder heads, pistons, and connecting rods have all undergone a similar process of strengthening and lightening to produce a powerplant that will not only cope with the strain of 10.5 psi boost pressure, but become more free-revving in the process. To these ends, a fairly extensive use of titanium is found in the LS9, along with forged aluminum and aluminum alloys, and of course forged steel.

The result of Corvette’s dogged attempts to build a better motor, is an LS9 that will spool to 6,600 rpm, while producing somewhere in the neighborhood of 620 horsepower and 600 pound-feet of torque. GM has already told us that 200 mph can be viewed as a baseline for top speed, but they’ve also tuned the engine to be well mannered at the low end.

It's nice but you can twin turbo a C6 and get nearly 700 at the wheels

$45k +$10k turbo+$5k install = 60k z06 and zr1 killer.

Maybe at a drag strip, but there's a bit more to this than just an engine. The Z06 and ZR1 are lighter and have better suspensions and brakes than the base 'Vette. Last time I checked, you don't get 15.5" carbon-ceramic brakes on the $45k versions of it.

While your at it. Just add that kit to the ZR1.

Now introducing the TTSZR1 comes with 10 extra sets of tires a year.

You can always add stuff to bring it up to par or better.

The only major difference is buying the top of the line model gets it all w/o having to add things + factory warranty and exclusivity.

ZR1 is going to be in the 6 figure range easy.

Trust me, I don't think you want to look at the price tag on an aftermarket carbon-ceramic brake setup.

Yeah, it's nice to get a warranty when you drop that much cash.

It's expected to be in the $100-110k range.

mine eyes have seen the glory!

3 cheers for GM. This is a thing of beauty. I'd get one and go ferrari hunting on the track

Kudos to GM. Car looks beautiful. I hope they keep the window in the hood. The vette will always be the best performance car for purests imo and this is no exception. There's a reason why GM has so many lemans wins. They know how to build a great sports car and have been doing it for 55 years. It'll blow the doors off the FordGT which was 50K more expensive. Don't f*ck with the general.

sad thing is, there are still people woh don't give the vette its respect becaue its an american car.

The Vette has a long rich racing history also and is a purepred in every sense of the word. Granted the interior was substandard for the longest time but even that is fixed now with the "All leather" option. I wish I could afford one. Rode in a Z06 once and it was mind alteringly fast!

I love the zr1! I'm not a huge chevu fanboy but that thing is just badass. I see z06s all over florida, i can't wait to get a chance at a ZR1..lol

Beautifully Badass! (2thumbs)

I can't wait to see this latest vette in a comparo with Ferrari, Viper and the new GT-R! Something tells me it will have no problem holding its own against the best of the best!

As for the cost of the engine alone...I bet those carbon brakes account for a major chunk of the overall price...There is this high-end tuner shop near me that mainly works on euro cars and they had a set of carbon brakes for a Porsche on display...the pricetag...$35,000-$40,000!!!
