hhmm.... mazda ftw already, give it up !! loL
I can't believe that I have read through this entire thread and not a single person has questioned the 08 turbo Cobalt 'Ring' time of 8:22.
I am calling BS on GM on the 8:22 time. GM is wanting us to believe that the Cobalt used for the 8:22 time was a production Cobalt even though I don't believe it was ever stated. I say BS. I will only believe the balt will do that time when a production 08 turbo Cobalt gets the same time or very close to it.
Want to hear why I believe this?
Hear is a video of the 08 turbo Cobalt on the 'Ring'
2008 Turbocharged Chevy Cobalt SS (full version)
If you pay close attention, his lap starts right about 0:11 and ends at about 9:20 for a ~ 9:09:00 run on the 'Ring'.
First 1/2 of the video, no rain and you can hear the tire indicators screeching which means the tires are reaching their limits...car is being pushed hard.
Light rain does start to appear...but notice there is a significant straight during that time. It is also common knowledge that the "Ring" frequently can have rain on parts of the track. So the video posted above which has some rain is not an uncommon occurance.
Driver is talking through the video. Uh...don't Rally, F1, Nascar or ALL professional drivers talk to their Pit chiefs while racing?
Has any of you looked to see what cars can actually run the 'Ring' in a 8:22 time?
Show me a production 08 turbo Cobalt, no changing of tires, get a 8:22 time on the 'Ring' and GM will make a believer of me. Until then, GM has f'd with the 08 turbo "production" Cobalt to get the 8:22 time.
I use rental cars almost weekly on business trips and I refuse to use Cobalts. They are crap cars. Granted, the rentals are not SS trimmed. And this is unbiased as I do not own a Mazda.
They need to do a followup to this commercial now that little bro cobalt has beefed up!

...And I dont know what marketing BS GM may or may not pull with the Cobalt but with the vette they usually end up being extremely conservative on the specs they put out... marketing hype can backfire rather badly when used in the wrong vehicle...
The difference is the Corvette is a proven leader car around the world, not just the US. And it seems the C6 has cemented that leader role. How much do you hear about the Viper in the last year? The Cobalt...well it desperately needs marketing hype...wasn't the whole Cobalt SS almost killed?
I agree that test mules do slightly fudge the numbers, but I am thinking we are seeing a whole new low (or high) in 'Ring' number fudging to boost that marketing hype prior to the new car's release by GM. GM as a whole is struggling is it not?
What's the saying...All publicity is good publicity. GM's marketing group for the Cobalt is having wet dreams because of that 'Ring' time. Lots of teens and early 20s lining up to get their hands on a "proven" race car for cheap when it's released. Hell, here we are talking about the Cobalt. GM's marketing team has done their job.
i just read some details on the new SS vehicles from chevy.
no LSD.
I'm currently debating between these two cars its hard to honestly weigh out one or the other but are turbo and similar HP. However the SS posted a faster time on the Nurburging that alot of high end peices at 8:22. The MZS3 posted a 8:39 if i remember correctly. My main deciding factor is not on some simple lap times but more about dealer location and service. I have a good chevy dealer locally, closest mazda speed dealer is 2.5 hours away and I was told by the local mazda dealer only mazda speed can work on the MZS3. This was kind of a let down. I considered the civic SI for a while but ruled it out b/c of lack of performance in my book for sheer upgradability and overall TQ. So I was hoping to get a few opinions and see what you guys might have to say.
Regards, Ven
Go with the Cobalt.
I won't regret it.
I love my speed3.
You should buy a Chevy. The resale is really good for a Chevy. Get a yellow one. Grow a big mullet. Go away. Soon.(gtfo)
P.s. Forgot to introduce myself I've read a few posts here and it seems there is a pretty neutral crowd here and that always good to see.
I never said this.(shrug)
I mean yes I did.
I mean, well, unless somebody added to the bottom of the quote.
Um . . .
