i can watch TV/DVD on my factory navi. I don't have an 08, i have an 07. A shop installed it for me, with a swtich installed so I can switch the screen between the navi and the tv/dvd combo. I can watch tv/dvd while driving too (though I don't do it all the time). The mode for audio is AUX.
there is a wire you have to ground, when circuit city installed my tv, they showed me the wire that needs to be grounded. which they rig up somehow so when u pull the ebrake , it grounds. i have it wrapped around a screw under the cup holder panel that pops out. u just gota find the wire somehow with a manual or some s*** and get a good ground.

hmmm... can someone PM me details about watching dvd's on the 07 factory mazda navi?

i would suggest to install a separate dvd/tv player so that you can still use the navi while watch dvd. Mine is set up so even if I am watching dvd, if I need to find myself, I can switch back to the navi, set up the voice guidance, then keep on watching the movide and the "lady" would still talk to me.
I was looking on Ebay for the item. Fully loaded with Ipod adapter and Bluetooth is only like $900.00. This is a very good idea; would love to see pics once you get it installed.
I did a boatload of research... Pioneer makes another model (the D2 I believe it's called) that's basically the same... except it has a slightly bigger screen (with no knob which blows) and a hard drive. Thing sells for like $1700. Since many of us already have ipods, it's a lot easier/cheaperto just use that as your hard drive. plus... unlike the "upgraded" version, you can also watch videos from your ipod.

Is it possible to get you to post some pics of your setup and the specific hardware? This would make the differance between me getting the OEM Navi or going with something aftermarket. Are you saying you have two screens or have two different inputs feeding the stock Navi display?

Especially if you want to preserve that factory look.
Personally I think the aftermarket systems look horrible. Nowhere near as elegant as the facotry unit. I've had factory Nav in both my 04 and 08 and find it works very well. Sure there are restrictions but EVERY system has some sort of restrictions-especially when it comes to resale value and looks.
And what's all this about people wanting to watch TV while they drive. Stay the hell away fom me on the highway.
dude... don't waste your money on that pos nav system. instead, do what I'm planning on doing and get yourself a pioneer avic d3. sooooo much better (and cheaper)

Well you're certainly entitled to your opinion... but something tells me you've never actually USED an aftermarket nav (like the one I posted). Since I've used the factory model (and obviously the one pictured above) I CAN attest to the differences... which are vast and very worthwhile.
So even if the look of an indash double din HU/Nav system doesn't look quite as 'elegant' as the stock setup (which is clearly debateable. I disagree wholeheartedly but, again.. it's subjective so why bother) the good would certainly outweigh the bad.
Audio Fidelity... (Most good aftermarket HUs will perform far better than even the top of the line Bose. The Pioneer I posted above was rated very high by countless car audio sites/magazines.)
Ipod Integration & Bluetooth... (not sure if you can access an ipod with the factory unit or not but I know there's no bluetooth handsfree available.)
Sirius/XM (with traffic) Compatible... (why be restricted with just one service?)
Far more advanced nav system... (the service -forgot the name- pioneer uses is amongst the best. very uptodate and accurate. From what I read -and experienced- the factory unit just can't compete.)
Touchscreen... (that remote device is just plain awful in comparrison)
The list goes on but I think you get the point. As I said, the look is subjective.. but for anyone who actually likes the look (which is why I wanted to post a picture) it truly is a no-brainer. Less expensive overall... far better in every possible way.
Watching dvds (or video via the ipod) can be dangerous. Listening to movies/shows is no more dangerous than listening to the radio. Plus, when you have passengers (especially children on a long trip) it's a great way to keep them entertained. But more importantly... it's just cool!!

I still think the facotry Nav is a good choice when you balance operation with style. Mazda did such a great job designing that interior it seems blasphemous to mess with it.

its illegal to have one playin in drivers line of sight, the motion can cause distractions regardless of who you are you will glance every now and then to look when you see motion on the screen, mine flips out so when i see a cop i jsut put it away, i download music videos tho i dont watch movies while i drive and i dont have kids
To the guys with the aftermarket NAV:
Obviously in the one large picture above, I can tell the "info" bar above the stock HU is not functional anymore, but are any of the aftermarket systems compatible with the steering wheel controls (Or are you guys adding these on sport models w/o the steering controls)?
I'm not big on NAV anyways, but I was going to spring for the factory NAV. The thing that I hate though is having buttons and things in the car which no longer work. If the aftermarket systems dont utilize the steering controls, I'm not going to bother with it because it's just something that bothers me (esp since I paid for it). I could get by without the little "info bar" on the dash not working, but I believe it still works for temperature stuff and the HVAC system, so it wouldn't be a total loss.
Also, I'm familiar with bluetooth, but what is the advantages of having BT on an aftermarket unit? Is it for usage with hands-free cell phone, or is it something else?
Chances are I think i will try for ~JOJO~'s setup, his sounds to be the most practical for keeping the stock system and having the extra features. I probably wouldn't use the TV/DVD system as much, but it would be nice to have for trips. And I like the way the factory stuff is laid out.

The AVIC D3 does give you hands free operation with your bluetooth phone which is a major plus. I think it can even copy your phone book as well. But I agree, I am leaning towards JoJo's setup. I hope he can give some insight as to how he did it, what exact things you need to buy and if he can post some pics.

The ONLY thing you miss out on in the info bar is the radio station/cd track #/ etc (which goes without saying) I know some also don't have the clock but there's a workaround for that. everything else, temp, trip computer, etc. works just fine so there's no downside there.
And yes... the AVIC D3 will copy your phonebook so you can literally just put your phone away and use it to call people if you prefer.
