06 EVO IX MR vs. 06/07 WRX STi. I have a few questions.

wow 4200. thanks for those links!

btw,

what does GSR and SSL stand for?

Whats the difference between the EVO MR and the EVO MR Special Edition?

Besides the 6spd tranny, what else makes the MR difference from the regular IX?

GSR is the "normal" version, meaning not the MR and not the RS. in Japan (i think, or england) they have a version designated the GSR and it is the closest to our normal version that they have so people call the regular version the GSR here because it has no other designation. SSL stands for the sun, sound and leather package. it gives you a sunroof, leather interior, upgraded sound and HID headlights.

i don't think there's much difference between the MR and the MR SE. a front splitter, maybe some different stitching in the interior, maybe different wheel finish. that's about it. mitsu should have the details on their site

the MRs biggest upgrades over the regular version are the transmission, the bilstein suspension, the stupid sonic fins at the back of the roof, the wheels, and the aluminum roof. maybe a few other cosmetic things inside and out also (like shift knob and tail lights and such) but nothing major. it should all be listed on mitsu's web site. imho the MR isn't worth the extra cost, especially if you plan to change things like suspension and wheels anyways since that's a majority of what you're paying for

Do all MRs come with leather?

Also, I heard the EVOs had launch control, so all you got to do is press it, rev it without worrying of going over and just dumping hte clutch. Am i right? is that true/how it works?

i didn't think any of them did but it looks like it may be an option. see below

http://mitsubishicars.com/MMNA/jsp/evo/06/trims.do?loc=en-us#trimsTab

INTERIOR: aluminum sport pedals, front Recaro bucket seats with premium Alcantara fabric (or available front charcoal leather-surfaced Recaro seats), leather-wrapped Momo three-spoke steering wheel, 140-watt Mitsubishi CD audio system with 6 speakers and more.

not quite. they have a rev limiter in first gear when the car is stopped at 5,000 RPM that mitsu put in to help save themselves from warranty claims from stupid people for launching from redline. once you start moving that rev limiter goes away. it's not really launch control, just a standard rev limiter with nothing mechanical attached to your driveline so you need to pay attention to what you're doing still or you'll break things. when you get a tune they can raise it to anything you like as some people like to launch higher. as you can imagine, if you want to launch correctly you don't want to just dump the clutch you want to give it a little slip as a 6,000 rpm clutch drop probably won't turn out well.

For the MS6 you cant dump the clutch, you will smack hard. Slip works great. I do know some of the STi guys dump theirs or slip it at 3.5K. But i seems you guys (EVOs and STi's) have a debate whether to slip [on low rpms] or dump on high.

I the clutch really THAT bad? I know you said your's has worked fine and dandy, but averagely speaking. I dont like to launch a lot on my car, because hte MS6 has a weak differential.

I guess all cars have their flaws.

how bout the STi's? some say they have a weak tranny, others say the contrary.

btw, evom.net wont let me post a thread nor a post. WTF is with that 48/72 hour scanning? I feel like im entering a foreign embassy or getting approved for a visa lol

from my experience, it's been fine. from what i've read, it's all about how you treat it. it's as good as any other clutch. if you run it hard or abuse it it'll wear out

i don't know much about the STI. i know the WRX had a relatively weak tranny when it first came out but still it was like the evo's clutch. if you beat on it, it will break. if you drive it like it should be driven it'll be fine

i dunno, i signed up there back in 2003 because back then you couldn't search without being signed up. there are some crazy rules sometimes. they're mostly in place to keep spam people away and to force newbies to search for the inevitable questions they've seen 50000000000000 times, like STI vs Evo threads (i actually read a bit of one today in the noob section)

modding the MS6?....nah.

jred, i know lol, the fact i couldnt post made search for a few things. i guess its a smart idea on their behalf...

I wont be trading in my MS6. I will be trading in my CX-7. I do real estate and I need to keep one of the cars stock. It wouldnt be appropiate to put clients in my "noisy" car...much less one with a spoiler and racing seats. I just finished driving MS6Mike's car for 4 hours straight. He lend it to me so I would do some oil changes over at the shop. Car ran a 12.8 before the FMIC, should be in mid 12s now. So I have ridden in fully modded fast MS6s, you can count on that...So I do know what I might be missing on and I have no problem with it. I'd still have the comfort of the MS6 and the performance of the EVO/STi.

There's my silly statement elaborated Queen latifa...:D

btw, just thought of this. Doesnt the Evo's insurance cost more than the STi's? plus the clutch replacement [eventually]. Wouldn't that compensate for the cheap aftermarket parts and lower MSRP/sales price than the STi?

insurance is pretty much going to be the same on both cars (expensive). you're also going to need to replace the STIs clutch just as soon as you will the evo's clutch. they're both awd so they can put a ton of strain on the clutch depending on how you drive it which will cause it to wear out. if you're a reasonable driver both clutches will last a while. if you're looking at an MR the STI is cheaper i believe. nobody pays MSRP for the STI or the evo, invoice is more like it for both. i got mine at invoice + they were doing 0% financing for 60 months. sti aftermarket parts aren't too expensive either, they're in the same ballpark as the evo.

the biggest differentiation between the two cars is your preference, not price or cost of ownership. go drive both and see what you like better.
