Should I Buy a MSDSPD6?

Hello,

I got a new job and realized that my 2nd gen RX-7 won't be cutting it anymore for my daily driver. I have been looking at the Mazda3 and Mazda6 lineup and have found that I am attracted to the Mazdaspeed6 the most. I just don't know how practical it's going to be to spend 6k more for the Mazda6 other than it is AWD and is faster (which are 2 big things for me). Having a nice car that is also practical, quick, and AWD is important... but I guess my question for all of you is: "How much trouble are the Mazdaspeed6s?" Basically, it will come down to some of the common problems that people experience after driving a new Mazdaspeed6 for a few months that will persuade me to either buy one or not. If you could fill me in on some of the things I should expect after buying one, and some of the problems that are common, I would greatly appreciate it! Thanks a ton.

I won't lie and say that they're completely trouble free, but it is important to remember that what you ususally find on a car forum like this is an overwhelming percentage of people who HAVE HAD problems. The folks who are enjoying long, trouble free lives with their cars often don't join forums because they don't need to vent, and don't need any information. So...even if a bunch of people reply to this thread warning you against the car, remember that it's a very small percentage of total owners.

The small issues I've had don't affect my love for this car. It's everything I've been wanting in a car. Just one more piece of advice....if you'd like the best chance of remaining trouble free (and having no warranty issues with your dealership) just leave the car in its stock form. An overwhelming number of people on the Mazda forums I frequent who are having turbo seal issues have modifed the exaust in some way. Just an observation for you.

the stock turbo is garbage, so are the axles, and connecting rods if you ever want to increase you horsepower. Currently a fuel solution is being researched but as of now it looks like fuel runs out around 315whp. Other then that the car is good. Not a big aftermarket tho.

a daily driver eh, you should give try regular 6 gt v6 loaded with navigation and satellite and see if you like the noise and stiffness of the hotted version. keep in mind that the regular 6 is most likely cheaper to insure, cheaper to repair, and ought to give good grunt in the low revs too. Which may in the end be easier to live with.

I have had mine for about 9 months, and a little over 13,000 miles now. No problems at all. As was said previously the people who post on car forums are going to be enthusiasts who are more likely to modify (and possibly abuse) their cars, so of course there will be reports of problems. For me, this is a wonderful car. Good ride and handling, awesome power, and so far under the radar that you can get away with murder (well, almost).

When it comes down to it, your money so your choice. Personally I don't think you will be disappointed.

I beat on mine for the last 18 months and I haven't had any problems. I Auto-X'd it 15-20 times and I had all kinds of suspension mods and I never had a problem. I also did a custom exhaust and a AEM CAI and never had any engine or drive train problems. I put almost 23,000 miles on it and I drove it every day. I'd say for sure get one you'll love it WAAAAAAY MORE than a V6.

I'm only selling mine because the payment is more than I want to pay anymore...and let me tell you, selling this car has been one of the hardest decisions that I've ever had to make.(sad2)(sad1)

Buy it now. If you leave it stock, it is still amazing. As a tuner car, it can have its quirks.

But trust me, if you are looking for a MS6, no other car will sacrifice. I tried talking myself out of this car before I bought it for the same reasons as you (is it really worth 6000 over a V6?). In the end, I couldnt be happier. Its one of the fastest stock family cars under 35000, but it can be bought for much cheaper than that. I think it feels high quality inside and out. The doors are solid (none of that cheap feel when you close them), the interior is very nice, and the looks are super stellar. Get a black on if you can find them.

Just look what cars offer speed and AWD and practicality? Lexus IS250, IS300 and IS350, Audi A4, Legacy, VW R32 and thats about it. I say this car is second only to the IS350, but I am totally inlove with my car, and that is a biased answer.

Does great in the snow as long as you invest in snow tires. But, the ground clearance could stand to be a bit higher when there's deep snow on the road.

+1 Don't let the car's ability to accelerate in snow make you believe it will turn and stop equally well. Summer tires on snow could be the death of your sheet metal. You can be REALLY careful and get away with it, but remember....things happen.
