Speed3 Problems Galore!!! (Anyone else experiencing this?)

I purchased my Speed3 in April of this year, and since then I've had so many problems I'm getting ready to drive it through my dealer's front door. Here's a list of what's happened:

April 14th - Getting ready to drive my grandmother from Lincoln, NE down to Austin, TX to visit my parents for a week, and the CEL comes on right before I'm ready to head out. I tightened the gas cap and did the usual (hadn't heard about the CEL problem yet), and the CEL ended up turning off before i left - so I didn't think much of it. Went to open the rear driver-side door to pack the car and the trim catches on the front door and bends the edges of the front and rear door so I can't open the rear door without first opening the front door (as the edges were catching on eachother). Called the dealer and he told me to bring it in when I got back - that they'd had several reports of the trim coming loose and damaging the doors.

April 16th - Get ready to show my parents my new car in Austin, and notice the CEL is back on. Took it to the dealership down there and the replaced the CEL and flashed the computer.

April 20th - When I get back to Lincoln, NE (where i live), the engine is making a horrible rattling noise. Take it into local (non-speed) dealer here and they have to overnight a new pully tensioner. They give me my car back and say it's safe to drive for the weekend while I'm waiting for the part to get there. Take it in the following monday, and they fix the tensioner, but oddly the belt was shredded over the weekend, and they have to ORDER IN a new belt, so they have to keep my car yet another day.

April 23rd - Get my car back, and call up to the Speed dealer in Omaha who I purchased it from to schedule getting the door fixed. Drove it up and dropped it off, and got a loaner.

April 27th - I get the car back and drive it back to Lincoln - after closer inspection there are still spots on the inside of the doors that were worn down to bare metal, and the sticky tape they used to adhere the new molding is twice as thick as the original tape on the other side, so the molding is rubbing on the edge of the front door every time the rear door is opened. This time, they drive down to Lincoln (an hour drive) to get my car and drop off a loaner.

April 30th - They fix my car right this time and bring it back to me. I'm happy to have my car back.

July 6th - I notice that the edge of the bumper on the passenger side isn't flush with the body. I can't pop it back in, so I don't think much of it and just shoot an email over to the dealership I bought it from mentioning the problem "just in case".

August 3rd - Come out of my apartment and the bumper on the passenger side is no longer attached to the car. I noticed that the hole that is used to bolt it to the frame is completely worn through. I also noticed a couple of screws missing from the bottom of the bumper. I call up the dealer, replace the screws, and drive the car up on Friday, the 8th. They say they'll fix it, and I schedule the engine mount inspection and an oil change while they have it. They give me a loaner.

August 6th - The sales manager emails me and tells me that they found a "point of impact" on the bumper, and that they were going to go ahead and fix the bumper (using a washer to fasten the bumper where it has worn through) since I had had so many problems before. I didn't remember there being a point of impact when I had looked at it before, but didn't really want to get into an argument of my word against there's, so I told them as long as it was fixed (and I didn't get charged anything), I wasn't going to raise a stink. I also asked if they were absolutely sure that the point of impact was the cause of the problem rather than being a symptom (i.e., the bumper was HANGING OFF THE CAR) - they say it could be, hence they reason they'll go ahead and fix it.

August 8th - I get a call from the service department telling my car is ready. I ask if the oil change and the recall were performed on the car - and they guy doesn't know - says the salesperson I was originally talking to would know and to call back the next day to check with him (since he's off that day). Call and email twice and don't hear back from him until...

August 9th - Called and finally got ahold of the sales manager. He gets ahold of the sales person that was overseeing the whole process, who then tells me "Oh, I thought you had already picked it up". I drive up to Omaha that night, and get there and the sales guy gives me my car, and shows me a spot on the underside of the bumper that is obviously scratched up (looks like I hit a curb that was too high or something - but ONLY on the passenger-side corner, no other scratches anywhere). At this point in time I'm thinking maybe I DID do something or maybe I should've taken it in earlier when I reported the problem - so I'm ready to let it go as long as everything else is fixed.

August 13th - Today I come out and once again, the bumper is coming off! I'm getting to the point where I've had my car out of my hands for SEVERAL weeks. I relatively certain that if I get into it with the dealer, they'll just say "Looks like you hit something, it's not our problem - but we'd be happy to fix it for you - for $$$".

So my question is - what do you guys think i should do? Has anyone else had this many problems with their Speed3 or the dealer? Should I take up the corporate ladder - if so, who do I contact? There are no other Speed3 dealers anywhere near me (the next closest speed dealer is 3-4 hours away, and I'm sure they'd just JUMP at the opportunity to deal with someone else's problem). I LOVE my car, but it's seriously wearing on my nerves. I've got two kids and don't really have time to be dealing with this every other month! I know the lemon laws in Nebraska state that you have to either have the car in the shop for 30 days or 4 times for the same problem. I'm pretty close to having met the 30 day mark - but even that's arguable. Any recommendations?

its a little strange your bumper just randomly comes off.

vandalism maybe? are there any other speed dealerships near u?

call the other dealer if you like, what ever you do you have to be persistant. You can probably arrange something where they tow your car to the dealer that is 3-4 hours away. i would continue to call the dealer and have them fix it. and you can get free stuff since its taking them about 2 trys already to attach a bumper. Just keep calling them about all the problems. its their car and you have warranty. it sucks but try to stay cool. i had my car out of my hands for about 2 weeks and it was bad. in and out of the shop really gets ****** annoying when your making payments on such a nice car. no matter what it will get fixed. if they cant fix it then call corporate or something and complain about the bad service.

That was my thought also. It started out looking as if the clips just weren't holding the bumper in anymore...so it wasn't a big deal at all. It would "click" back into place and only stuck out a millimeter or two. So it wasn't all at once, and it wasn't something I was terribly concerned about. After it came completely loose (which was a month later), I noticed that it wasn't a clip at all, but the hole in the bumper that the bolt went through had worn completely through. I also thought it was odd because the plastic around the hole (the part that had been worn through) was very pliable - not as stiff as the rest of the bumper. Don't know if this was a defect or what? It was very obviously broken from repetitive stress. I wonder if they had the new guy assembling the body of my car that day.......

It would be somewhat crazy for someone to come along and just try to yank my bumper off. Then again, I guess there are some crazy people out there. The closest speed dealership is 3-4 hours away :(.

Wondering if your car got hit or something while at the docks. Also, wondering if you are scraping the bottom just barely, and when pulling away from a curb or whatnot, maybe tugging on the bumper. Pics would help here, IMO.

For the record, I got SLAMMED into from the rear by a cab driver here, and all that happened was some minor scratches on the rear cover, and a small cut on the bottom black plastic that turned out to be a hole in the plastic itself. I just cut into the cut plastic, until it looked like a square hole, so it looks semi-stock, and I buffed the rest out. That bumper is fine. So, it shows me that the bumpers aren't easy to take off by accident. I have also rashed the front under-bumper area many times, just because this is my first LOW car, at it always seems like it is 1 thousanth of an inch too low for the concrete parking lot curb things. My bumper=still on the car.

i have had no problems at all 14,500 miles, i alwasys change my own oil. remember our cars take 6 quarts of oil the regular 3 takes like 4 ive heard i places putting in just 4 quarts by mistake.

I noticed this same thing on my MS3 while installing my Injen CAI. Both sides were actually broken and felt rather 'thin and cheap.' I can't believe that the entire bumper cover is held on with 10-12 screws and 6-8plastic rivets. To repair the problem, I basically superglued a washer over the broken section and went on my way. I am hoping that it stays together.

As far as the problems you are having with your local dealership, don't worry about getting your salesman involved. If you can't get satisfaction out of the Service Manager, then goto the General Manager. If the General Manager doesn't help, then try Mazda's Regional Service Representative (contact Mazda USA for his info). Your last alternative should be Arbitration/Lemon Law. Remember, to get anything done with Arbitration/Lemon Laws, you will have to have impecable records including photos of your vehicle before and after work being completed.

Good luck and I hope that you are able to work it all out!

Good to hear that somebody else encountered the same problem. I know that the bumper has scraped curbs more than a few times - but I'm fairly certain that's why they put an inch of black plastic on the bottom of the bumper - so that you don't do serious body damage under what (I think) would be normal usage. Sure, it's a lower-clearance car, and you should go around ramming it into every curb you park at (I cringe every time I hear someone scrape their bumper)...but in my opinion, the bumper should NOT be falling off because the very bottom touches the curb occasionally when I park the car - and if that's expected behavior I would consider that a design flaw.

Regardless, I'm not looking for a brand new bumper (nor did I ever ask for one) - I even went so far as to express appreciation for them "fixing" the bumper in the first place, considering the fact that they had questions about the original cause. I guess I'm left with a bitter taste because of the treatment and poor service I've received. I'm debating whether to raise the issue just on principle or forget it and fix the thing myself.

You had 5 different problems, one caused by continuing to drive with a bad pulley. Of these problems 4 were taken care of, 1 of which with some problems. The 5th is kinda up in the air. You were without the car for 13 days, 4 of which were weekend, 6 of which might not be dealer responsibility. Sorry but with the title of this thread, I expected a bit more.

The real question is...how much is a "galore?"

J/k of course, I feel for you. I once had a 2000 Celica GT-S that was about the same trouble, but for me it was all transmission related. I hated that car more and more the longer I had it because some of the problems weren't repairable. Hopefully you feel better about your MS3, ya know.

wow that sucks ass. I havent had a single issue with mine aside from the motor mount thing.

LOL, you have to be kidding me. Maybe I'm just a perfectionist, but when I pay $25k+ for a brand new vehicle, I expect to drive it for more than a month or two without having to take it back to the dealership multiple times. I really feel for Papa and would definitely consider his MS3 plight 'problems galore.'

Say heck with it and get the autoexec bumper.
Good thinking, but he's got two kids. I hear kids are expensive. The Autoexec bumper might makes $en$e if the original is worn-through. But he'd also have to have it painted, adding to the total cost of the repair.

If the only thing "broken" with your bumper is the plastic pins/clips, then you should be able to "MacGyver It" - replace the plastic attachment pins with:
1. harder PLASTIC than the surrounding material
2. metal (aluminum, stainless steel) but this can wear-out mounting holes
3. plastic zip-ties or rubber material.

Also try using epoxy and fiberglass to fashion new mounting points or brackets. You can reinforce a weakened area by adding a metal or plastic plate in-between fiberglass layers in your repair. If metal plates are used, pre-drill the mounting holes in them if required. Always clean the surfaces prior to applying epoxy and when possible, "scuff" the surface it's being applied to to ensure the best possible surface adhesion.

Pictures would really help. Get them.

You should learn the definition of terms as well if that's the case.

Ryz, I agree with you wholeheartedly. Given the title of the thread I would have expected multiple breakdowns or a fire at least :-)

FYI defintiion of "Galore"

http://encarta.msn.com/dictionary_/galore.html

I counted 3 main issues and a couple of screwed up fixes. "Galore" is defintely the wrong word (blowup)

"A few annoying problems" would have been a more accurate title.
