so, is this alternator belt easy or not to replace? is it a tension spring in there or do i need to take it off?

i'm new at fixing things myself so any detailed info you can give is appreciated.

Very easy to replace.

There is a tension adjuster on the alternator support bracket.

Simply back it off and add the belt.

You will also have to remove the belt that runs to the PS and AC.

The same thing. There is an adjuster on the PS. Back it off until you can take the belt off.

To tighten the belt you should be able to barely push the belt 1/2 inch in between the pullies.

Keep the tools handy. If it starts to squeal, tighten it up. It's normal for the belt to stretch.

thanks joe...

so the belt i'm actually replacing is called the drive belt?

there are 2 belts, you should replace them both at this point...why not?

one is generator, the other is PS & AC

I have the same problem, though mine hasn't broken yet--just shredded pretty good.

How in the hell would you put a wrench on that tensioner? From under the car? It seems the nut is facing the firewall. (help)

For better or worse, I have an appointment tomorrow morning. (ricer) (group)

if the top bolt is the tensioner it seems accessable... but if it's that other bolt, i am in trouble (i'm already in trouble seeing how i dont know cars but i can turn a bolt).

do i need to get under the car to do this???

geez, i'm kinda lost... i re-re-re-read everything i've been told... a tension adjuster on the PS.... thats simple... but then i keep re reading and others are saying this or that... what is it?

There are two parts to the tnsionser.

There is the lock and the tensioner.

Both are bolts.

This is totally simple. Belts are less than $30.00 for this car. You should be able to just look at it a bit and figure out how it works.

That'd be 30.00 CDN right? Gates or Gatorbacks were both around 50.00 US most places I've seen. I suppose there could be other cheaper ones. 100.00 just seems wild to me just to put belts on. I'd like a gig doin that all day. Hell, I'd even do it for a less than that too....providing tipping being allowed. LOL.

of course it couldnt have just been teh 14 dollar belt...

the wheel was seized when i got to it today and it's the alternator that needs to be replaced.
