Trailer Hitch for CX-7

im curious as to what a cx-7 can tow exactly. would it tow a car on a dolly? trailer perhaps? i doubt that one.

It's limited to 2000 pounds--that includes your weight, your passenger's weight, your stuff in the car, and the weight of the trailer itself. In my case that's 210, 110, maybe 30, and 600, leaving a "payload" of 1050.

I'll take 21 fifty-pound bags of mulch, please. Sorry, I'll have to come back for the petunias.

Installed my Mazda hitch today and what a pain, especially since I was by myself, had to use jackstand to hold up the other end while working on the other end. They should have designed the frame with welded nuts instead of having us snake it thru. Thought about getting it install thru the dealership but what a rip off, my dealer was charging $290 while it's sister dealer about 15 miles down the road was only charging $135 and when I told my dealer, he did not have an answer!! Either way, I figured that I'm not that old yet to do it myself, now it's installed and my back, elbows are sore LOL!!

Was the pain in the A$$ the MAZDA or the 1 from etrailer? I am interesting in getting 1 w/a tube step to keep cars off my A$$ here in New York.

Hitch

I got a drawtite 2" receiver hitch. very easy to install, mostly hidden, works well.

I am looking for some input on which trailer hitch I should purchase. I found 3 (5 if you include the different class ratings) hitches for CX-7's at this link and of course the one made of gold from Mazda for $455 (installed). There maybe other out there and please let me know about them.

Considering factors are but not limited to:

1.) Least noticeable when installed (or cleanest looking)

2.) Easiest to install.

3.) Price (but they all look reasonable on that link)

4.) Light wire harness

Just got this one and will let you know how it turns out. There's a local place that installs these for pretty cheap and they're very good with the wiring (I don't trust myself). I had a Class I installed on my Mazda 3 and the most I towed was two motorcycles. No problems, but it was a bit sluggish. It is one of the reasons I got the CX-7.

There's now a "OEM replacement" wiring harness available that plugs directly into the six-pin connector that comes with the power seat option (the plug is located under the cover that you'd open to replace a tail light on the passenger side). It's available from etrailer and is p/n 118249.

I just ordered a Draw-Tite Class III and that harness. I'll post how it goes.

I forgot to add the link. This is what I got including the wire harness on the same page: http://www.etrailer.com/productdetail.asp?partno=87421&vehicleid=7499&yearfrom=2007&h=

Actually, the towing capacity goes up to 3500# if you have 4WD. Regards, Ace

Where does it state that because it certainly doesn't in the specs and features page on Mazda.com

The writer cited is in Canada. The US OM specifically states (page 4-14) that the max load is 2,000 pounds, 2WD or AWD.

I agree with you on the OM instructions. I didn't mean for my post to sound like Mazda had posted those figures, just that I had come across the 3500# figure on several sites while searching for CX-7 info. Sorry for any confusion. Ace

So, can it tow more than 2000? :)

Ummm...no, not in the US, officially. Do whatever you want, but if your tranny fails, and there's, say, a Class III hitch on your -7, your dealer might give you a lot of grief about it.

And, the manual is pretty clear about it..."TTW" (Total Towing Weight) includes your weight, your passenger(s)' weight, the weight of the hitch, the weight of the trailer, the weight of what you've piled on the trailer, ambient air pressure, and the phase of the moon. In short, they don't want you hauling anything on a trailer. But, this being the Land of the Free, Home of the Brave, and Region of the Terminally Stupid, I'm sure someone will try to install a fifth wheel mount. Chromed. With a spoiler. And a hook-up for a Borla exhaust extension. Plus a subwoofer package. Tinted.

Right, I understand that the manual states you can't (shouldn't), but can the 7 tow more than 2000 lbs without an issue? Obviously, I don't expect a true answer, but if it can tow 3500 lbs in Canada, why should there be an issue in the US???

Beats me. Ask Mazda. Why are drugs cheaper in Canada? Who wrote The Book of Love? How on Earth did the Colts come back from 18 points behind? Some questions have no answer...

Why did Mazda design the dash the way they did? Because they were on cheaper drugs bought from Canada after they read the Book of Love while watching the Colts beat the Pats.

@ azcat

You really make me laught... We had to meet next time I will stop @ The Dragon, with my CX-7 hauling our FZ1 and FZ6 bikes (my wife's and mine)...

Ride safe!
