What happened to the mules?

I was reading an old SCC, and a black mica MSP they tested was a pre-production mule from Mazda. It was still and MSP, but it had a sunroof in it, and when they showed the underhood pics, it actually had factory hardpipes. THey are the same shape and everythign as the stock ones, but they were black powdercoated (or painted) metal hardpipes. Pretty cool. I'm sure there were more things I forgot to notice, but I was jsut wondering what Mazda did with these "pre-production" cars. They may have been destroyed, but I'm willing to believe there's one sitting under a cover somewhere in the world...

That's what I figured. I wonder what else was different about the test mules that didn't make it to production...

not always, usally they end up in the museums. Like the one @ Torrence CA and Toyota

read an article on car and driver while back when the 94 GSR first came out, the preproduction model had to be crushed after a certain date. Also the few Skylines brought by nissan had to be crushed and monitored by the EPA after the show dates.

makes sense, most of those cars are probably not street legal, emissions, airbags...

Anyone have pictures of the pre-production MSP muel? It wasn't the red MPS modle with the two tone, sun, roof, FMIC and racing seats and big brakes was it?

Nto all pre-production cars are destroyed. Grassroots motorsports has a civic si that honda wanted back but they asked if they could turn it into a racecar instead and that is what they did.

Sniff around SCC's site. There was a review on a Spicy MSP in the October 2002 Issue, it had no sunroof, but had factory hardpipes, and the one I am referring to was a black one, in the January 2003 Issue.

I'll check their site and see what I can find.

I can't find the site, but these pictures are nice, wish the person that took those pictures of the red one would've taken a pic under the hood.

ANd the Orange Ballistic Unlimited showcar looks nice, interesting to know the red protoype has more torque then the MSP, but has the same HP rating..

I just noticed that the tailights on the orange car are painted below the turn signal and reverse lights. That looks great!

Can someone scan those issues for me? Theuy look just like MSP's do now, only they had sunroofs and factory stainless steel hardpipes under the hood... They also had cruise control.
