When your wga is bad and you boost 15psi, what causes the boom? Is it merely that fact that the weak rods can't handle that kind of pressure, or is the stock tune also to blame? Any other factors?

2 Factors, most end up being broken rods.

Too Lean = Much More heat and HP = Broken Rods or Melted Piston Rings.

Too much Boost = Too Much Force = Broken Rods

So there are some things to consider.

Even with forged rods, an engine can be made to fail.

Tuning and modifying is "an art of balance"

You have heard of people saying 12Psi is safe with "Supporting Mods"

Things like SAFCII, Front Mount intercoolers, 440cc Injectors, Safeguard, Remote Oil regulators, GT28 Turbo,etc...

All of these things help ensure that the best case scenario is better than stock.

Reducing the intake temp helps reduce the risk of detonation.
Controlling the fuel more accurately helps reduce the risk of detonation.

No "Supporting Mod" can make the rods stronger, except replacing the rods.

I have pauter rods, but my ssafc is not installed. I had a itch to poke some holes in the wga vac line and put a check valve in, but I'll hold off on that.

Good Call, No point burning up the pistons for nothing.
