Will this engine work?

I have tried the search on here for the past 30-45 mins and havent had any luck. I did see on the wiki page for the mazda engines and it said it would be compatible, but that page could be edited at any time.

I have a 02 P5.

My engine bit the dust, and since its my only mode of transportation I need to replace the engine asap, instead of doing a rebuild.

I found a 2.0 out of a 02 Mazda 626 with 138k for $275 at my local salvage yard with a 90 day warranty.

When I called them the guy was like "oh it wont work, and if you need to bring it back there is a 20% restock fee blah blah blah".

I plan on using my accessories and also plan on installing a new water pump, and timing belt while im at it.

So will it work? :)

Also, whats the deal with everyone asking if my car is a auto or manual when replacing this engine?

yes! the 93-02 626, 93-97 mx6, and the 01-03 protege WITH A 2.0 all have the FS engine. the intake manifold might change, and maybe even the exhaust. but you have all those parts from your engine if need be, the BLOCKS are EXACLTY the same.

Thats what I was thinking... I did some more research and typed in "engine compatibility" and found out that I have to also use my p5 cam gears and valve cover on the 626 engine.

Thanks for the quick response.

yea, its not gonna be a FULL engine swap but they are the same blocks and the good parts or the parts compatible with the p5 are interchangeable. Ive even heard the 626 intake mani works better, might wanna look into keeping that one.

Ended up getting the 626 engine... swapped over the valve cover from the p5, cam gears from the p5, stock exhaust manifold from the p5 and the intake manifold from the p5, put on a new timing belt, new water pump, new belts, new NGK spark plugs, fresh oil change with PEAK 10w-30 with bosch oil filter, removed all the exhaust heat shields, and put it in the p5 and after a few cranks started right up. Runs so nice.

The guy at the salvage yard I got the engine was like, its not gonna work, if you have to bring it back there's a restock fee blah blah blah.... shop (where we did the swap) took the p5 core back, and the guy I delt with before said, did it work, we had our doubts.... I then said, "im the owner and (pointed to my car), there's the protege." You should have see his eyes get great big. haha!

So glad I did research on here, thanks to everyone that has done this swap in the past. :) :)

I still have the 626 intake mainifold..... what makes it better than the p5? I had to get my car back on the road asap, so I didnt really look into swapping it.
