What is up with the moms in the minivans/SUVs..

Lately I have been noticing moms in their minivans/SUVs trying to cut me off or trying to speed up when there is room in a lane infront of them so I can't get in to take an exit.....I mean the list just goes on and on of the annoyance some of these women are providing me on my daily commute to work. A lot of the wanabe racers have calmed down cuz of the cops trying to make more revenue......I don't have problems with them. I don't know if any of you have witnessed this in the tristate area...but this is really getting on my nerves....Funny thing is, I yield to every situation that occurs cuz it doesn't make sense to even challenge them for their stupidity or for that matter anyone elses. Heck I have even had a woman slam on her breaks to have me hit her in the back....and then when I went around...she flicked me off...(let me not forget....she was on the cell phone while doing all this)

I can't speak for your area but just about every other area I have lived and spent time this has been going on for atleast 3-4 years since the SUV boom. Ever see the Simpson's "Canyonero" episode? That says it all.

Canyonero...nahh I missed that one...I know how the SUV folks drive like they own the road and if your not at eye level with them u might as well be road kill. But these moms, is what gets me...and they look over(most of em wearing their shades) to show you they meant to do that. They just bring their frustration out on the road.....(argh)

they think they are still driving honduhs...it' called the "Mad Mom Syndrome"--jealous of bytches like me in hott little sports cars. Oh yah, I get it ALL the time...but then I out run they're big fat land yachts....:D

This is all too common of an occurance in our area! I see this all over the DC Baltimore Metro area especially on the 495 and 695 beltways.

I love that Simpsons episode.

...and not to be sexist or anything, but I have yet to meet a woman that can drive a full size suv (that includes all forms of parking). I know for a fact my mom, both my sisters, and my g/f cannot handle my dad's Bronco...and that isn't nearly as big as a suburban or tahoe or expedition.

It is quite funny to see some women try to drive these tank on tires.. and be completely incapable of parking.. once I saw this woman in a massive suv.. Suburban or tahoe or whatever.. Trying to parralel park behind a Porsche 911.. She hit that Porschey like 5 times.. Man I woulda been pissed if it were mine. Oh and I really dislike SUVs/minivans as well, mostly because those pieces of s**** block my view of the traffic in front of me... And they are overall more dangerous than a regular car.

I'd rather see people driving minivans than SUVs. That is the only reason I don't hate them. And if you rear end one, your car won't be totaled.

I saw video from a car pile up on the news a few weeks ago. An expedition rear ended a Utility van, and a honda accord rear ended the expedition, except it ended up underneath the expedition. The truck's rear tires were lined up with the back seat of the accord, thats how far under it went.

I knew there had to be some kind of medical terminology(MMS):D for their somewhat psychotic behavior. Oh, and I must be one...sexy B****:D to be getting that kind of attention as you do...heh, heh. Well even when I outrun or avoid them...they always end up on my rear bumper breathing down my neck...and I know they're staring right at me, trying to intimidate me. When I look at my rearview...they're just glaring at me from behind their steel facade. It's kind of like they enjoy the fact that they can pull right up to you so close just enough to not hit you....

'Warning!! Stand back!!!'Ferocious chipmunk under the hood'
I actually said that to this couple by the mall once...(the couple sorta jumped when they heard my BOV go off) so when I parked my car they came in for closer inspection...to see what was under my hood that screamed at them. The look on their face...was definetly 'priceless'.

That is also a very ture point why we should ban these SUVs, they are a visual hazard(to our eyes and also based on the view traffic 5 cars ahead rule).

This is yet another reason why I believe that anyone who wants to drive an SUV should get a CDL or specialized driver's license. This way, the driver will get the extra training they need for their barge. It will also keep your average soccer mom from getting behind the wheel and causing a trail of mayhem and destruction.

...or we could just push for harsher licence tests that actually require people to parallel park. Did anyone here have to parallel park during their test? Did anyone have to merge onto a highway?

These are the things we encounter every day as drivers. Why it isn't on the test is beyond me. And why they think taking the test once confirms that you can drive for the rest of your life is insane. The traffic laws and patterns 30-50 years ago were completely different.

I changed my mind, bad driving has nothing to do with age, sex, or vehicle size/type. It has everything to do with training. Driver's Ed is a joke, and you don't even have to take it to get a licence.

man, I could go forever on my bitterness for these kind

Around my area (snooty Fairfield county, CT), we have plenty of SUVs, but most of them are Lexus or BMWs. Once in a while there are some H2s on the road too (all I've seen driven by women).
It really annoys me when I see someone being an ass, be it SUV or car, which makes me go into that silly "I got to teach them a lesson" mode, which is immature, but it fuels my male needs.

Last occurence was this Explorer on rt 15/Merritt Parkway (2 lane, 65mph limit, hilly, surrounded by trees, breakdown lane means jumping the curb and parking on the grass). Explorer in a big mad hurry trying to go through left lane so was riding extremely close to the Jeep in the left lane. The SUV never gave the Jeep a chance to get out of the way. Now, it's obvious that the Jeep couldn't care and was pissed (I would too) and it was trying to keep up with the right lane car since the Explorer was being a beoch.
I was just waiting behind the Explorer pissed because we were now going below the speed limit and if only the Explorer stopped tailgating the Jeep, the Jeep would probably get out of it's way, but noooo.
After many miles of this somehow the Jeep was made passable and the Explorer went right and then back to the left lane in front of the Jeep. At this point I was just really mad at the Explorer for being such a dick, downshifted to 4th and punched it on the right lane. The Explorer was obviously trying to keep up (We weren't going past 95mph for the hell of it) and I passed him going around 104mph, put my left blinker on and got in front of him. I was surprised I didn't have more problems, especially since I had a ski rack with skis on top of my car, whistling away.

Anyway, yeah, it was immature, but I felt justice was served, in a twisted way.
It was late at night too, so the road was pretty empty.
SUVs, a plague...

Don't utility truck drivers and delivery men have to have a special class licence? The Chevy Suburban is bigger than most utility trucks, in fact its almost as long as a UPS truck!

Wow, and I thought the laws were laid back in Maryland.

In MD, you must back up in a straight line, perform a turnabout in a box (kind of like a 3 point turn except you have as many tries as you need), and you must parallel park. However, there is no merging or highway driving required on the test.

I agree that you should have to take a refresher test every so many years and not just a vision test. All you have to do here is pass a vision test every 5 years to renew your license.

Also, in Maryland, driver's ed is required to get your license and your first license is restricted and you can't drive from 12am-5am.

I'm pretty sure that you don't need a CDL even to drive an RV, isn't this true?

I do agree that license's are very easy to get, but some people just don't care about driving. It's in the attitude, some are oblivious to others and have the "they should be watching for me" attitude, while others want to be aware of what they are doing.
I'm always getting hard on myself when I notice that I'm not paying as much attention to my surroundings like I should. I don't put my trust on other drivers, so I'm always on the look out for cars and people who might come at my car for some crazy reason.

Here's what we have in MA, its a start, but not what I would like:
If, and only if, you are enrolled in Driver's ed:
Driver's Permit 16yrs
Driver's Licence 16.5yrs, but there must be someone over 18 in the car if there are people under 18. eg, you cannot drive your friends around. This law is for the first 6 months you have your licence I think.
Seatbelt is required no matter what the age.

If you are not enrolled in Driver's ed you can't get your licence till you are 17 I think. I'm not sure how the other things work out though.

For the test, all everyone in my school had to do was.
Pull out the back entrance of the RMV. Take a right at a stop sign onto a fairly busy road. Take a left at a traffic light 50 yards up the road. Take another left onto a back street another 50 yards up. Back up 50ft in a straight line. Take a right at the end of that street back onto the main road. Take a left onto the back street. Pull into the back entrance of the RMV and park in a normal spot.
Total time: 15 minutes max.

My friend made it half way down the first street with the parking brake still on and still got his licence!

15 minutes and you are granted the priviledge to do something that is one of the top 10 causes of death in this country.

Quick question that I've always thought about...
when you are merging on the highway, coming around the standard curved onramp. Is there a point in the turn where drivers in the right lane should be merging with you?

I try to calculate where I will fit in as I'm rounding the curve, but when I get to the end of merging section, if I can't get in I usually have to force myself in.

Do you see a difference between a 'merge' sign and a 'yeild' sign? Merging, IMO requires both drivers to cooperate. When people don't cooperate, you end up with cars stopping on the on ramp because drivers in the right lane feel "they should be watching for me" and "I don't have to change speed".

Then there is Route 128 in MA where from 7am-10am and 3pm-6pm cars are allowed to drive in the breakdown lane....that is what I call a fight for your life merge.

I think what you guys are missing here is that the SUV can't drive itself, you got to have someone driving it. Alot of the problems are how people drive not what people drive. Personally i think a damn IQ test or some kind of common sense test should be required with minimum limits. Lets face it most driving situations are common sense.....with out common sense where do you end up.....yuppie in a huge suv running recklessly unchecked. BTW if you think they're bad on the highways you should see them off-road where there are only verbal understood rules. When i used to go out on the beach at oregon inlet a lot they would just run people over at high rates of speed, park in the middle of the travel lanes for no reason, and just generally not get out of tracks if you met them oncoming to avoid a head on collision.

Interesting observation. I always make notice of Yield signs but never really gave any thoughts to plain merges.

I guess I'm very pessimistic about other drivers- always expecting someone to not yield, or not use their blinker, or turn on red when it says not to, or swerve into my car for no reason.

So I guess in the case of the merge I don't really expect anyone to cooperate so I try to make sure to get up to speed myself when I merge and get out of their way if they're merging slower than the highway traffic.
