Trying to find some foam, hlp?

kinda long, need some help...

Trying to find some foam sheets but im not sure how i should search for them. basically you know how sometimes you buy computer parts etc and it has the dark gray foam and has a cutout in the middle for say the hard drive to fit in? its flat (not the nippled kind).

im googling but getting like memory foam matterss pads, diy foam kits, air packaged stuff, stuff that is foam but not that, etc.

im sure you can buy the stuff somewhere (im looking for two sheets about 1.25" thick, and 16.5"x12.5").

basically i just bought this:

i plan on ripping out the document holders, and putting the foam pieces in there. then i will cut out holes for my digital camera, nintendo ds, cell phone, ipod, and misc batteries and chargers associated with those items. once shut, i should have a pretty secure holding area for all my expensive/important electronics to take to iraq with me.

from there ill slide it into a padded laptop backpack that will hold the rest of my stuff (toothpaste, razors, stamps, foot powder, letter writing material, flashlight, etc) that is non-military related and hopefully keep the sand, slight dampness and shock away so that i can keep the stuff working and reliable for a year if need be.

after that ill just need to paint the case black (i looked at black cases but this one was the best for me in terms of dimensions in and out), so what do you suggest for that as well? i was thinking duplicolor black paint that is used for painting wheels...but if you have something that will hold up to scratches better (doesnt have to be perfect) let me know.

Maybe go to a professional camera shop (Like wolf camera or the Cali equivalent) and ask them. Dont fancy camera cases come with that stuff, so you can safely transport cameras and lenses and stuff?

Matt,I have a foam supplier just a few miles from my house...I am sure they will have something you could use BUT...I won't be able to check until tuesday because of the holiday.

matt that would really be helpful if you could. its not like im going to iraq in a day so im not in a rush. if you could give them those measurements and let me know how much, ill prolly buy a few if they are reasonable.

any ideas on what i could search for on the internet/google to get the results i want? i just cant seem to get a good search word in that is distinguishing it from the other bulls***

Some types of Polyethylene or polyurethane seem like what you would need.

damn thanks, im on the right track now...but thats cut into little 1/2 inch squares it says.

its cut in a way the foam is a block and you rip out the little squares to form the spaces for your electronics. its really a good idea since cutting your own spaces in foam is a pain in the ass.

go to a camera store and check it out. see if its what you want. it seems like a pretty good system to me, since ive tried to cut my own from solid foam and its not that easy to cut. might be easier with a hot knife/ wire or something.

Have you tried searching for standard "egg crate" foam? That stuff holds items in place, and does a pretty good job of protecting them as well. Same stuff that you would see in a gun case. Not terribly expensive either. In peepsalot's link, you'll see a bunch of those cases have it.

yea im still lookin...i found a place but need the proper size. i need 2.5" split in two so obviously 1.25...they have 2.5, 1.5, 1 etc but not any .25 sizes that i could even put like a 1" sheet down and a .25 inch sheet down on each side.

Go check a material/fabric store. They usually have what you need in varying thicknesses. WalMart might have some in the material section too.

as an update, i searched walmart, target, ace hardware, kragens, ups store, fedex store, michaels, and a few other small craft stores with no luck. pretty much no one around here sells the stuff, so it looks like ill have to buy off ebay.
