The AT gas/brake pedal proximity thing

Having a wee bit of trouble with the "coziness" of the gas and brake pedal with the old size 11 clodhoppers. I am often clipping the back edge of the brake pedal with the left edge of the shoe when moving right foot from gas to brake. It's going to be real interesting when Sorel season comes upon us.

Not sure why they put them so close together, there's plenty of room to the left of the brake pedal and all you'd need is 3/4 inch or so to fix it.

Spouse's Civic AT does not present this problem, I just bang my head on the roof of that one, which is why I didn't consider one for myself.

Anybody worked out any strategies/mods for this short of driving barefoot or taking a torch to the brake pedal assembly?

my only mod... was to go out and buy skinnier shoes. my size 12's were a little too wide. i almost hit the brake when accelerating, and always caught it when lifting off the gas. I still cannot put my foot straight up and down though, which makes things trickier. i have been meaning to look into a strategy as well. i think somebody here bought the pedals for the manual (which has a smaller brake pedal).
