Spring Clips for Front Brakes

Changed my brakes yesterday and today I noticed the sound of something scraping against the rim. When I stopped to check, I noticed the spring clip from the front passenger side brake had popped off and was tuck in my rim. I checked the driver's side and couldn't see any clip at all.

What is the purpose of these clips? Is it bad to run without them in?

They just keep tension between the caliper and the caliper mount, basically holding them in one place. The only thing I would guess might happen without it is you might get some uneven wear on the pads if they shift around some. I'm not sure if it would be more serious than that or not, but for that reason alone I would replace them.

Thanks. That's what I was thinking.

i just recently replaced my brakes and felt they were vital. i dont believe the caliper was truly secure without the retaining clip

I know this post is a few months old, but this is exactually what happened to me.

I just changed my brakes and rotors yesterday and this morning my driver's side clip came right off. Do I need to take the caliper off to put the clip back on or just the tire? I'm not really sure how these "clip" in.

They just push right in. You'll want to get one end into its hole, stretch it around the top of the caliper, then use some pliers to get the other end in place; follow that with a few light taps with a hammer to get it in nice and snug. The ends go in pretty deep, but you'll be able to feel when they're in all the way.
