2oo2 silver protege 5
i have a 2002 p5 automatic. -=( i kno shoulda waited for the 2002.5 but oh well.. is anyone running turbo on this or do they know if it is a good idea or what? im looking for some info. i wanted to go like 6 pounds of boost but i donno if u can do that on a auto. sorry if there is already a forum on this but i searched an didnt find one.

I think someone asked but no one really gave an answer.
I don't see why not. Unless you just can't get the components to fit right. Even if the tranny ca't handle it there are companies that sell racing autos and can rebuild it better, 10 something or other.

Know one that I know of has attempted a turbo with an automatic in a Protege. Know one that I know of knows the strength of the automatic used in the protege.

If I was a betting man. I would bet that a turbo on an automatic P5 would be 'reasonably' reliable if its driven in a responsible manor.

Example:
Weekly trips to the drag strip- probably no good.
Neutral drops at 4000RPM- probably no good.

Boosting in normal spirited driving conditions, probably okay.

Another opinion I have is...If you an afford $3600 for a turbo kit, then you can afford the $500-1000 for a transmission rebuild if it all goes horribly wrong. Or you can pay for the transmission rebuild with the sale of your turbo kit! ha ha...;)

If you have the cash to pay the piper, go for it! Unless someone with a more knowledgeable opinion strongly advises against it.

Anyone? Anyone???

I think it would bolt right up too.
The turbo can't generate boost with out a load anyways so you can rev all day long in neutral and no extrapower is produced untill the turbo gets going.
I would think it would be fine

Turbos work fine with the stock auto transmissions to a point. What's that point, I have no idea because I havn't got to it yet. Been at 6psi for some time now and have had no tranny problems at all. Neutral drops shouldn't affect it any more than normal, which is just hell to begin with.

I say go for it. Any kit should bolt up just fine with no modding. And if you want to upgarde the slush box, level 10 is the company that does it.

thanks guys.. i appreciate all the info.. everyone on this board is just so gosh darn helpful. -=) last question. if i run 6 pounds of boost do i need to get a fuel controller or a intercooler or anything. im pretty new to this turbo thing.

Fuel control is VERY necessary and a difficult task to do right on the protege. Just ask Keith at FM! They seem to have a correct solution though.

See, www.FMprotege.com

For lower boost applications an intercooler isn't 'needed' but its a darn good idea. 5-6 psi is probably the limit for a non intercooled system. That's with good fuel control and other factors being correct.

Are you thinking of making your own kit? Or buying one?

i wanted to just buy a kit. but i wanted to know the ends an outs.. and what ever else i would need to buy to go with it.. hoses.. turbo timers.. blah balh.. all that stuff. if i do go with a intercooler would i be able to paint it black or put some kind of thin black mesh in front of it? i dont exactly wanna say race me when i drive around.. im not a big fan of every civic with a wing or altezzas trying to race me..
also.. i am not rich.. so best results for the money spent would be what im looking for.. any turbo owners with an opinion? any vendors? let me kno
