Protege5 Long start up time?

anyone noticed our car has a slightly longer start up time?
or maybe it's just my car?

My last car, 97 corolla, the ignition time was really short, usually the car starts up in 0.5 seconds, now that I have my P5, a lot of the times the car doesn't start the first try because I let go of the ignition too early. sometimes I'll have to hold the key to ignition positiong for 1-2 seconds before the car would start.

is the normal? anyone noticed that? is your start up time noticeably longer than other cars you have?

I notice that the car takes a while to start up sometimes too. In fact, sometimes I don't manage to get it started and I have to hold it even LONGER afterwards. Makes it seem like I'm driving a beater.

But, once it started up.... mmmm yah.... so nice.

yeah that's exactly what happens here. I have another Mercury car which also has shorter start up time than my P5.
other than that, the car is perfect.

ozz: no I don't push gas pedal when starting, I only do that on 80ish cars that requires 10+ seconds start up times. :)

Yeah slow start time for me too. Also sometimes i found lately that it won't shift until a few seconds after the engine starts.

i only get it in winter, mmm 4degree startups.... anything over 14 degress is all good

Mine has been doing this too lately. Only 8750 miles, sunny florida, and no problems at all. Idk wtf is up with it, but it really doesn't bother me that much...

i should add thats celcius... mmm metric....

soooo 4 degrees is 39, 14 is 57

oh yeah it does actually take ages in heat like 82F^

Hum, I've never really noticed till the now. I don't rush into going anywhere so I don't bother noticing on the p5. My '94 Corolla is about the same so that could explain things, but my parents '99 V6 Camry does start up pretty quickly I guess. I don't think a slow startup is a bad thing, unless you have to keep turning the key a lot. Happens sometimes on a cold day where I have not driven the p5 for awhile that I'd have to turn the key twice. New spark plugs would be in order since I have 22000 miles now.

yup, i was wondering the same thing. my old car had a mnuch smoother ignition compared to this.

btw laser, do you go to ucf? sorry for thread jack

Definetly longer. I was thinking about taking it in to mazda, but since it starts up and mazda is gay i dont think they will do anything about it. I figured it was just my car, and i will have to replace the ignition soon (warranty is up this month). Thanks for lettigng me know it is just the P5 not my car.

Probably dont worry about it. It seems like all P5's have this issue so there is nothing wrong with your car.

I am still coping with losing 1.5 seconds of my time every time I start up my car though. (hah) (glare)

Add a new ground to chasis

I had this problem too at first. So i added 0 guage from the battery negative to the chasis and upgraded power cables to 8 guage and now it starts quickly, less than a second. first try.

and don't forget to turn off air conditioning, lights, stereo etc. makes it easier when all the current from battery is being used for starting.

never push ur gas in while starting a car on a new car expesally if its under warenty its not good for the engin it may work on older cars that actually have full sized engins but our lil 4 cylinder quick bult thing are ment to work one way. iv noticed my a/c malfunctiosn some times.ne one know y? but i have had some probs with my egnition. when i have held it to long on start it wont start the first time after iv messed up but im sure thats my falt. to be honest i think iv bene hearing alot of probs with our dear p5s im starting to get worried..... but im not gonna lose hope i love my p5

I noticed that it takes a sec longer than the honda's and toyota's in my house but ti was like that since I got the car.well as long as it starts and gets me where I need to and it's not a beater, I'm happy.

i adjusted my idle down a little bit, and did the ground wires.....
