P5 Problems? Lots?

I'm confused.

All the local guys in my area say that Proteges suffer from a lot of problems (or have little niggling problems, says one protege owner). General consensus here is that the Mazda Protege has problems.

Yet I come on the boards and everyone says that they're "da bomb"! No problems, etc etc. General consensus online is that they're fine.

Is it true that Proteges have a lot of problems? Maybe its just the auto tranny?

Someone please help!

zero problems for me. 12000 miles/ 1 year. manual.

the autos do seem to have a higher % of problems than manuals. but im sure thats characteristic of many cars as autos are more complicated.

where are the local guys getting their info? some people just like to talk like they know what they are talking about...

most of these people also drive there cars hard as well...also the more you modify the car the more little problems occur...thats why i dont b**** and complain aboiut every little problem...i try to solve them

No problems what so ever here.
25k miles in one year, sport auto which gets driven hard once a day on the way home.

Think some people are getting confused and thinking the MSP problems are also encountered in the Proteges. This is of course not true.
The only Protege to currently have a good number of problems is the MSP. Course most are currently being fixed with the recent ECU flash. :)

0 problems, 1 1/2 years, 44K miles, manual.

Every car has it's little quirks and annoyances (eg. how the hatch area gets filthy very quickly, unknown rattles sometimes), but that's just part of it all, you can't expect a car to be perfect - that's why we mod it :D

Treat your car nicely and it will return the favor.

auto...on my 3rd tranny, not driven hard at all....too many other problems to list. 35,000km (20,000miles?)

Just mailed my nastygram to Mazda...hope they'll do something for me.

My P5 has been very enjoyable for the 2000 miles I have put onit. Other then the roof liner making a pesky noise and the cold start rattle fixed via a TSb nothing much to report. Again its a standard.

02 auto, 41k miles, had a idle issue...replace the egr valve, wires and plugs. no other issues. car runs like new! actually this car is better than any other new car i've bought (this is #5)

No probs! 22,000 miles and counting, and I bought the first model year, in Feb. 02. This is with NJ driving where a poll showed that NJ drivers were the shortest tempered (and probably most stupid) in the U.S. But noooo probs with my car! Luv it!

So far on the 3rd gen's I'm the high milage king at 81,000 miles. At least no one has challenged that yet. I have a manual and it gets the s*** beat out of it everyday. I've never had my car in for any issue...period. The only thing I can even remotely call a "problem" is my warped rotors, but thats half my fault for my driving. Under normal circumstances you would have to have the worst luck in the world to have an issue come up on these cars.

this is my 2nd protege, the fist one had 65k miles on it with no problema at all. thats why i went with a 2nd one....now i drive an mp5 with 18k miles on it and no probmles.
proteges are suppose to be one of the most reliable cars out there

10K on mine no problems, just annoyances that all the cars have. I'm just picky. I love the car, glad I bought it. All my little annoyances can be fixed easily. Manual tranny too.

I totally agree with this quote and feel the same way about my sedan and my PR5 now. Have never had any major problems and I fix the little problems after modifications.

40k and the only problem i have run into so far is the stereo refusing to work. they replaced it and haven't had to go back to the dealer yet. ive had a couple other issues like rocks craking my windshield and a racoon trying to take my front bumper off while i was doing about 50mph but that would be the same had i been in a honda or any other car. personally, this car is the most trouble free ive ever seen and its so easy to work on. not like my old domestic cars

23k miles.

had the clutch chatter tsb fixed. - now things are good.

but the only bad thing is my own fault.

stupid racing beat exhaust bots fell off last night on the way
home. Pulled to a stop and then heard a CLUNK!!! next thing
power loss and a loud ass rattle. Oh well just one
of the cursed events in my life lately.

but no real problems with the 2002 p5.

now my jeep on the other hand .....
