OE Toyo Proxes A18-Flat Spots and Vibes

This is probably old news but...

I just got my 5 on March 6th and have noticed quite a bit of vibration in the steering wheel and seat when the car is driven on the highway after sitting overnight in the "cold" (for Vancouver!), say under 10 deg. C. I also get vibrations in the steering wheel around 100 km/hr, at any temperature.

It sounds like the tires are flat-spotting overnight. I did some searching and found that some Toyos have nylon in them and that this is known to cause flat spots? Has anyone got any relief from this, short of changing tires? Not something I want to do on a vehicle with 800 km on it!

The 100 km/hr sounds like a tire balance issue which I am getting checked out on Friday. The tires are 205/55R17 size.

Thanks!

You're not alone.

I've had my 5 for just a few weeks and about 400 miles and I'm having a heck of a time with vibration as well. There are times when the vibration is almost tolerable but after today's 1 hour trip my feet were getting numb.

I'm not looking forward to fighting with the dealer about this; I'm sure they'll want to begin with rebalancing the wheels but after reading a few threads on here my conclusion is that these OEM Toyos are junk, or at least of inconsistent quality...

I have a 2007 and live in Vancouver too. No problems with my tires. The tread sucks as it can't grip well when the roads are slightly wet.

Dealer visit...

Well, the dealer (Wolfe, Langley) balanced all 4 tires which seems to have fixed the shake at 100 km/hr and the tires did not seem to flat-spot last night, but it wasn't really cold. Guess we'll see what happens if it gets cold this week. Even the dealer admitted these particular Toyo tires are cheap and don't last long.

They also installed my new self-dimming HomeLink rearview mirror and all-weather floormats. Just a tint job to do and I'm about finished with the mods... for now!

What brand / model tires came with your Mazda5's?

Mine, that I picked up in mid-Februray, has Yokohama Avid S34 (205/50R17).

I stopped by Discount Tire today to buy a new one since I already had a hole in the side of one (hit an odd shaped piece of curb?) - they have never sold one. They are having their corporate office figure out a price for it. At the Mazda dealer the prices range from about $135 to $150 before tax but I want Discount Tire's extra (lifetime rotation, prorated road hazard warranty, etc).

Hello mate...where did you get the all weather floor mats? Just picked up my mazda 5 GT today and I noticed they have toyos on them. I guess I'll be looking to change them soon

All-weather mats

On the www.mazda.ca site, under "Accessories" in the Mazda 5 section. $80 for the front and middle rows, I think.
Part number is 0000-8B-L25.
