I have been lurking around the board for some time and just thought i would formally introduce myself. I am the owner of a 1995 Chameleon Blue Ford Probe SE. I am sure that most people know that it has similar engine to the newer Proteges. The reason I say similar is because I notice that the ignition system is not the same plus probably some inprovements from what the FS engine was like back in 1995 (something was improved because in 1995 the engine only had 118hp).
So why am I here? A bunch of reasons really. To see what Protege enthuisiast are doing to the 2.0L engine. Find out any aftermarket parts that are for the Protege that will fit my car. To share what I have learned about this engine over the last 2 1/2 years. And finally to do my part to improve both the Protege and the Probe/MX-6 interest and aftermarket.
I spent much of my time the last few years on ProbeTalk.com meeting lots of wonderful people and learning so much about my car. The most disappointing part about ProbeTalk is the dominate force of the Probe GT. With the KL03 they have about 50 more horsepower than the base and SE. Almost any aftermarket for the Ford Probe (which isn't much) is made specifically for the Probe GT. There are always a few people who talk about doing a FS to KL swap but in most cases it would be easier to sell the current car for a Probe GT. Engine swaps may be popular in the Honda world but in my eyes its not worth it for anyone with the FS engine.
Personally i believe the 2.0L (FS) is far superior to the 2.5L (KL). For starters i enjoy the simplicity of having a 4 cylinder over a 6 cylinder. Easier to change spark plugs and lots more free engine space (aka room for a turbo). Second the 2.5L uses a Volume Air Flow sensor which is very restrictive.
Need I say more? The 2.0L uses a MAF which is way less restrictive. The 2.0L uses topfeed injectors which are easier to find in the aftermarket world than sidefeed like the 2.5L. The 2.0L has an iron block while the 2.5L has an aluminum one. Most people agree that an iron block is better for boosting than an aluminum one is. For those of you who would like to point out the fact that iron is heavy compared to aluminum, minor compared to the fact that the 2.5L engine weighs 474 lbs and the 2.0L only weighs 390 lbs. By far the best reason the 2.0L is that thanks to Protege world the FS engine has come back for a second wind.
I love my car to death even though it is very stock and slow. Since my car is an automatic, it dynoed at 87.4 whp and my fastest 1/4 mile was 18.097 seconds. I hate having the slowest car around and want to do something about that. I would love to show the import world the the Ford Probe is not dead and like the FS engine, it is coming back for a second wind!

I have tried in the past to make friends and find a common thread with other car forums other than ProbeTalk but I have not had any luck The Cougar guys actually uninvited me and my club to a meet because we have an older engine that has nothing in common with their zetec and duratec. The 3000GT/Stealth people don't like me because they think that Probes are ugly and slow. Time to try this again...
