2002 Mazda Protege5
Hello everyone - I am now a proud owner of a 2002 Protege5! After years of driving Nissans exclusively, I finally gave in and bought what I've secretly wanted all along.

I'm looking forward to hearing any valuable advice from you guys!

If you want straight line performance or more than 220-250 whp without forging the motor, walk away. If you want something to take down those pesky miatas in the twisties you found your car.

Make sure you're not on the recall list for the Vic's screws, call Mazda and give them your vin, they will tell you

Tweety, thanks for the heads up! To be honest, the 1st and most important thing for me is to slow down any rusting that may be happening (I've seen a few P5's that are ate up with rust), then I wanna get the handling sorted out - boosting the motor is the last thing on my mind now! lol

Tweety, speaking of rust, how exactly do you go about stopping it or at least slowing it down? In DC I never had to deal with anything like this, but now that I'm up here in Minnesota - rust is an epidemic!

btw are you in NoVa or down in Hampton Roads? (cool)

Not sure About rust, I would say cut it out and weld new body panels in, or lots of bondo.

I live in Staunton semi close to Charlottesville/ UVA

Ive seen sheetmetal fender kits online somewhere - I live in MN also... and my rear fenders are looking BAD.
The rust is coming from the inside - there is a spot that traps water(and salt) inside the fender and once it starts...
If it isnt to that point yet - I would Undercoat the S*^T out of it and keep it waxed. If my car werent so far gone I would also peel back the carpet and soundproof the fender wells as there is a LOT of road noise coming from there you can hear every speck of dirt bouncing off the tires.

Welcome! You've probably found out already that these things handle really well out of the box! Though suspension is always the wisest mod!

Duly noted! Once the weather starts warming up, that's gonna be one of the first things that I'll do. I've seen so many rust bucket P5's here, it's crazy! lol

I'm already online now looking to replace the current strut/shocks with new KYB GR2's, I can worry about going faster later!
