Ok guys, here is the situation....

I took my car in today to get the cold noise situation solved and they loaned me one of those 2002 "rental fleet only" Ford Escort sedans. That car shifts through its automatic trans better than my P5 could ever hope to!!

It was always consistent in its shifts pattern and feel regardless of how fast or slow I took off from a start. And it was always smooth.

My P5 however, never shifts the same way twice...Sometimes it really holds the gear before deciding to shift and sometimes it shifts really quick and early. Also, sometimes it shifts really smooth where you cant even feel it do it and sometimes it really "jolts" the car. I can start off from the same stop sign and give the (what feels like) same amount of pressure on the accelerator and it will shift rough and long sometimes and other times it will shift smooth and quick.

The dealer(s) have said "that is a computer controlled trans and their is nothing that can be done"...

What I want to know is this,,,,1. Who else has noticed this? 2. Is this true that nothing can be done? 3. Is there any kind of adjustment or trans fluid I can change to that will make it shift quick and smooth?.......It absolutely SUCKS that a rental Escort with the same exact mileage as my P5 has (except im sure it is hard miles) drives a hell-uv-a lot better than my P5!

I know, I know and I double Know!!!...Shoulda got the 5-speed!!!
I am a 5-speed guy at heart through and through, but those of you who know my situation, you know I got stuck with an auto trans at the end of the month sales bliss at a dealer I was trading in a wrecked car for.....So there......

I like this car, but I am ready to get rid of it if it is never going to drive right....Gonna trade for a 5-speed "anything" asap if it doesnt improve.....

Help!!

Tay

i've got the auto and don't notice the problem you state. actually, i'd say it shifts better than a lot of auto's i've driven. i too wish i had a 5 speed but that's another story! joe

I have an automatic transmission as well, and I feel the variable shifting due to computer control is the s*** !

It gives the car an almost manual quality drive and feel ... several of my passengers have mentioned it to me. No stick shift driver ever shifts the same way twice.

Also, in my opinion, the variable shifting is evidence that the computer takes many more factors into consideration before moving gears ... rather than just the car's velocity/RPM's. Maybe that's just my wishful thinking, but it still brings a smile to my face.
:D

Additional note:

I don't mean to steal your post but ...

BazookaJoe, do you have pics of your faded silver tint anywhere ? I'm planning on putting up tint on the back windows, but I can't decide between silver or black, mostly because I haven't seen how a silver P5 looks with silver tint.

about transmissions

Ok, now for those who want to talk about transmissions and "not" tinted windows.....

I need to know if anything at all can be done since bazookaJoe says his is normal and does not act like mine. There has got to be something that can be re-adjusted on these P5's or a transmission fluid that can be substituted in place of what is in there. so that it is smooth and quick....Does anyone Know???

A buddy of mine with a Honda had his "computer controlled" transmission re-adjusted by turning a few screws under the hood and it did change the way it shifted.....Does Mazda have something like that????

Or am I just fighting a losing battle???

i experience the same types of weird shifts, where it holds onto gears longer than it feels it should sometimes. but i usually only feel this if im driving slow and its shifting at or under 3000 rpm. once the engine warms up and i get on the gas a bit, its smooth sailing
