I'm new to 247 but not to Proteges. I'm also firelizard on ClubProtege and the late iMazda, as well as other automotive forums all over the web.
I started out in a 1998 Protege DX, my first car, in high school. That car went from stock to show and then got sold when it started rusting.
I borrowed my mother's 1997 DX as well for a winter, then we sold it to my sister in law. Then it caught fire.
After I sold my '98, I bought a '99 DX that I drove for a little over a year before selling due to low cash flow. Oh yeah, I also had a 240SX project that I chopped to bits, and a Lexus LS400 that I resold at a great loss.
I bought a 1993 Miata a few months after I bought the '99, but it's a total heap of shhhh and it spends more time in my garage than on the street. I love it to death when I can drive it though. Very much a work in progress.
I also bought brand new Honda Ruckus, for fuel efficient commuting.
This thing has saved me so much gas money. Unfortunately neither it or the Miata are great in the rain, for picking up friends, highway driving or hauling anything, so I just recently bought a 2000 Protege DX, pretty much identical to my '99 (automatic, starting to rust, suspension disaster) but with half the mileage, and for $400.
So that's where I'm at now! I've been easing myself back into Protege-life, as I think I'm going to keep this one. I like that it's red, and I think I might be addicted to Proteges. Everytime I try and save up for a newer car, I end up with another Mazda instead.
Within a week of buying this last one, I found a set of Mazdaspeed brakes on eBay, complete with knuckles, hubs, calipers, and lines, all rust free (hooray for sunny states). So I guess there's no going back!
Aaaaand that's my intro. Hi!
