Hi everyone,

Im about to drop the tranny to replace rear main seal, I got all the parts and tools gathered up ,, but manual calls for a special tool that holds gear in place after both drive shafts are removed, Is there any alternative to this, I attached that part of manual so you know what im talking about.

i think what it is talking about is the differential...if you let it fall apart man!! you will have to take the transmission apart and reassemble the differential

what i suaully do is get a coat hanger and slide the wire through the middle to keep the diff from blowing apart

you can use your fingers to align it
it will all make sense once you remove the half shaft

The Open diff does in fact have two gears that will drop.

You can replace the "SST" (special service tool), with a screw driver.

My personal suggestion would be that if you plan to move the transmission, that you run a length of lock wire directly from one seal to the other thus preventing any chance of it coming apart.

or

If you have an old driveshaft, you can snap it off at the CV joint and shove that in the diff.

In this picture you can see the two gears at the top and bottom
