So I have been reading on the forums about the 2002-2003 Mazdaspeed Protege exhuasts..

I have read that the aftermarket Mazdaspeed exhaust drone a little bit more than usual and the ideal one is from the stock turbo variant of the protege.

The seller in this picture claims is Mazdaspeed Protege version, but it looks like the aftermarket one, and not factory direct from the MazdaSpeed turbo car.

Compared to this one that looks more OEM because the cylinder section is more oval than round.

Can anyone tell me what's what? I'm looking for an OEM one btw :)

The stock exhaust has 2 catalytic converters in it, the bottom picture looks like it could be a stock setup (muffler wise at least), but with a new cat in it (possibly a high flow cat?) I guess I'm not aware of any other MSP's coming out with only a single cat.

I just installed the Corksport 80mm exhaust in mine, with the intensions of selling the stock parts, but after pulling it all off, it was too rusted and not worth anything.

Hey YlwMSP - THanks for the reply back. Do u still happen to have the stock exhaust with you so I can see how it looks?

That top picture is an aftermarket "Mazdaspeed" axleback made by Bosal or Borla (I forget) and is the droning one. The 03 MSP exhausts are round (but not as big as the one in the pic) and say Mazdaspeed on the side of the tip, and the 03.5 are oval and say Mazdaspeed across the top of the tip.

I don't have my stock exhaust anymore. There was a hole in it and when it was welded up, the piping kinked and ripped the muffler because of all the movement in it. But yes, like KrayzieFox said, the stock tip will say "Mazdaspeed" on it.

Okay. Thanks guys. I'm checking one out locally today at the junkyard so I am empowered to do so now.
;)

These will fit the p5 by cutting the pipe tip about 4" right?

The bottom pic cat is from a normal protege, the normal ones had the pre cat built into the exhaust manifold, thats y the mazdaspeed cat has 2 on bottom, to make up for the missing precat due to the turbo. The top pic looks like some hack exhaust with a stock muffler with the MSP tip on it.

Again, the top pic is a "Mazdaspeed" axleback that was made by Borla or Bosal for the P5.. I had it on my old P5 and it sounded awful. Made your head hurt really bad during extended periods of highway driving due to the horrific drone.

The top 1 isnt anything mazdaspeed but the tip lol

i used to have the aftermarket mazdaspeed muffler on a non turbo 2.0 i didn't think it droaned that much. it was queiter then my current speed exhaust thats for sure....

You don't get it.. I'm not saying it's an authentic Mazdaspeed product, that's the name of the exhaust. It was sold as the "Mazdaspeed" performance exhaust for P5's and most refer to it as the Mazdaspeed axleback. As I said twice already, it was made by either Bosal or Borla, so no.. not even the tip is Mazdaspeed.. the entire piece is an aftermarket unit. See below.
