well... i can say with confidence that i have indeed jumped my protege5, all wheels off the ground, but nothing like what u and dude with msp did, with all that air, however to prevent such an occurance, what suspension mods would u think necessary while maintaining an autoX ready system?

hah..i've definetly jumped my protege..definetly..just not as fast as that guy with the yellow msp..i jump embankments and all kinds of stuff..and winter is here..snowbanks!

oh man, thats such a rough story! and you were kickin the neons ass all yr.....

cliff notes:
"The team were able to continue, but since the lights were re-aimed upward by the roll"

"The hood flew up a half mile into the 16 mile stage and the pair had to scrunch down and look out the gap below the hood at the bottom of the windshield to navigate the course."

"The crew worked feverishly with sledge hammers to ensure tire clearance and re-aimed the lights at the next service. Amazingly, the stout Racecraft/Burmeister Engineering built Mazda Protege was still mechanically perfect after the violent incident. A fresh windshield was installed and the team went on to win 9 of the remaining 10 stages in the rally with authority including every stage on Saturday"

"The data shows the revs going over 10,000 RPM in that rollover as I was still trying to save it," said Burmeister. "My Sunbelt prepared engine just fired right back up and it was still the strongest Group 2 car in the field!"

10krpm? i didnt realize this was wankel powered :)

and let me just say, if you are gonna have a crew working feverishly on your car, what better to have them working with than sledgehammers :)

I looked at the pics, and I read that, and I've come to this conclusion:

You're my new hero. (humpleg)

dayum......

now you see if u had a pretty evo style hood like mine, you coulda just looked through the vents :)

next time that happens, i would suggest bungee cords... they work wonders... get the super duper strong bad man ones

The hood pins still worked...just didn't want to take the time to get out, put the pins in, and get my belts back on. We only lost a minute or so in the 16 miles. The bad part was that the roof vent was held open by the light pod and the fumes coming off the engine and into the roof vent were making me sick. If I had to do another mile, I would have ralphed.

wow, that's an incredible story. Its what I want to do, really and truly. Trying to get it started... had some fun on dirt roads a while back...

I second the question: what kind of suspension does it take to do that?

First, the metal around the strut tops was cut out and thicker metal welded in and the towers are all tied into the roll cage. Then spherical bearings in aluminum housings replace the normal rubber strut bearings. Then custom ProTrac 50mm triple adjustable inverted monotube coilover shocks with external reservoirs are fited to each corner. Ohlins or Proflex are other good rally shock builders. The stock front a-arms are used, with spherical bearings replacing the rear rubber bushing. The rear subframe is scrapped in favor of a tubular unit that bolts directly to the roll cage and all the lateral links and trailing arms are replaced with heavy gauge tubing with 3/4" rod ends.

At full droop the travel is amazing...
