Fluid capacity question

2002 Protege ES
Hi everyone! Yes I'm a noob on here but it looks like I'm in the right place. I'm not a tuner by any means but I can do a lot of work myself. So here is my question:

I have a 2002 Protege ES with the Auto tranny with a sport mode (I guess that's what it's called, I can push the stick over and shift manually if I want). I changed the tranny filter last night but when I was refilling the fluid, I overfilled. The manual say's 7.6 qts. but I was putting the 6th qt in when it started flowing back out of the fill tube. First, will it hurt to run with a little too much? Second, what is the actual capacity? I didn't drain the torque converter so maybe the capacity in the manual includes that. I did measure what was in the drip pan after I finished and it was about 4 qts. but was very thin and smells burnt.

I have driven the car today and had no problems. It shifts much better now and is quieter. Will I hurt it to keep driving or do I need to drain some of the fluid?

Thanks so much for any input.

Brian
