FIC Turbo Kit install complete! BOOOOST!

Well, the prototype kit is on and working VERY nicely... I was pushing 12-14lbs of boost last night (unknowingly cause the boost gauge wasn't plugged in). So I plugged it in and made another run and realized what I had just been pushing! That thing pulled like a motherfucker!! :D So I brought it back, we adjusted the wastegate a little bit and brought it down to safe levels (approx 7psi) without any other mods. We've got a lot of dyno-ing and tuning coming up this week, but hopefully it'll be all nice-n'-pretty by Friday night for Tower Shops...

Here are some misc. pics

I think the big question is how much lag does the T3/T4 have on our motor? Inquiring minds want to know!:D

Dave

How much lag? A LOT!! Right now, I don't reach full boost until about 4K... Actually, when we had the wastegate closed up more (more boost to the motor) it boosted full at like ~2800 but it pushed about 14psi through there.. lol. We'll probably incorporate a pop off valve somewhere so I don't boost that much until we perform some more upgrades to the engine.

 4k! Not what I was hoping to hear... do you think it's possible if you tweak the wastegate a little more to get 8-10psi by 2k or so? Cuz that would be perfect for me..

By the way, CONGRATS ON THE KIT!! You've gone to the other side..I can't wait to see it in person on Friday!

If quick spool-up is what you want then you should be going with a smaller turbo...something like a 16G....

It may be "cooler" to have huge turbo...but unless you are gonna hard-core drag that car, you will never really be using the T3/T4 at its prime operational ranges.

I guarantee that if you took your same setup with a 16G or even 14B size turbo and push the same amount of boost you would get pulled on...because of the quick spool-up of the smaller turbos.

I have always wondered why some guys put huge turbos on street cars...especially Honda's that can barely make enough exhaust to push a T3/T4 untill they reach like 5500rpm.

IMHO for a 2.0 Protege...the ideal turbo for street/occasional strip is a 16G. With the right setup this would get a Protege into the 13's easy.

A T3/T4 is overkill IMO.

Well I don't know if I agree wit h that..I mean look here he said that he got up to 14psi at 2800RPM..now with a little tweaking, and the boost turned down, why wouldn't it be possible to get 10psi fully spooled in the low 2s? and thats pretty damn low if you ask me...At least for such a "huge" turbo :p

I realisticly dont think that is remotley possible for a t3/4 to spool up to 8-10psi @ 2800 rpm. With my 16g thats a much smaller turbo in comparison (blueprinted and balanced with a clipped compressor wheel and a tubular manifold) for even faster spool up. I dont even get that response time. I hit full boost at 3100rpm (8psi) You will be lucky to get full boost with that turbo at 4000 rpm. My buddys type R (b18 c5 1.8L) got full boost with a t3/4 at about 4800-4900 rpm. Now thats on a super high compression 1.8. I understand that the setup is not intercooled and that allows for slightly quicker boost but maybe by just a couple hundred rpm. Just for you guys that dont know how lag is measured this is how you do it. Get to 3rd gear with a passanger that can watch the boost gauge. Then have the car lugging around at 2000 rpm and mash the gas and watch the needle rise until you see maximum boost. On a BIG t3 like bens you will see boost in the neighborhood of 2800-3100 rpm. On a t3/4 you will realize boost by about 4200-4500 rpm. This is good for drag racing on a FWD car because we need lag so we can get some traction.

T3/4 is a good turbo for our application.............depends what you are using it for though. I would not use it as a daily driver but if I was into the whole 1/4 mile thing I would go with it.

I'm half and half...I mean like I said I don't race much, and when I'm doing daily driving the spool up time wouldn't matter as much...when I am drag racing is when it would really count, in which case I would be better off with the hybrid. But then again most of what I do is on the street so that also means stuff like 1st and 2nd gear rolls, is the t3/4 still better in that situation?

Before you stick your tounge out...you should know what you are talking about.... a T3/T4 wouldnt push 10 PSI @ 2800RPM if your life depended on it.

Anyone who really understands the methods/options of turbocharging could look at your statement above and immediately know one thing....you need more experience with turbos before actually putting one on your car (you may hurt yourself :p )

As for the technical backup...Spoolin already handled it :D

Damn, see what one typo caused?? LOL.. I'm sorry fellas, that's not suppose to read "~2800" it should've said "~3800". Also, that "4K" should read "5K" looks like I was sitting to far to the left on my keyboard lol :D I was a little out of it that day. My apologies to anyone this has affected.

Just because I am young and don't have much experience with turbos, does not mean that I will jump into anything without knowing about it first. That's why I'm here. I have many experienced friends, and I learn from them every day, and I also learn from a couple knowlegdable people on this board. I can't say I remember learning anything from you, though. The thing is, when I feel I am ready, I will buy my turbo, whether it be a T3/4 or something smaller, and I will do it myself, and I will do it right. If I need help, I don't hesitate to ask. So just because you think I "stick my tongue out" without hesitation, doesn't mean I will stick a turbo under my hood. But all that doesn't matter, cuz when it's all said and done, I'll leave you in the dust any day...and that's a promise.

Yes...it is obvious that you are young and inexperienced...its okay man...Ill let you keep believing everything you hear...but be carefull...there are those out there that will prey upon your ignorance.

Bye the way...dont try to tell me that your P5 would beat mine when you slap on the turbo kit...

I have something that you dont...years of experience/knowledge...driving a fast car that can beat OTHER fast cars is more than simply slapping on a turbo kit and thinking you are the s***...THAT sort of mentality will have a set of doors handed to them by someone else who has the experience.

Im used to running 13's in a 4 door....are you?

I didnt think so.

Why dont you just let the ones who can teach you a thing or three give you the correction you need...you cant run before you crawl my young apprentice.(no)

GReddy917, You say that you have years of experience/knowledge but you obviously are not a bigger man for it. slowyellowp5 is the bigger man in admitting that he does not have the experience but is trying to learn, yet you continue to put him down for his inexperience. Why not try to help instead of just demeaning the whole thread.
