cruise control works only sometimes

When I push the set button, the "cruise" light on the instrument cluster comes on every time, but the system only functions sometimes. More specifically, I push the button, see the light on the dash, let foot off pedal--> speed falls and doesn't come back.
There doesn't seem to be a consistent rhyme or reason to it--sometimes it works on the first try, and sometimes it takes like 8 tries, and turning the cruise control system on and off several times.

Anyone else encountered this? If so, do you know where the problem might be and a solution?

Check the terminals on the connector to the cruise control module for corrosion or a bad connection. Check your vacuum line running to the actuator for a leak or clog in the line. Check your actuator and cable for free movement. Spray some oil on the cable.
