autox tires

Pretty much everyone I saw at a recent meet had Falken Azenis... good price/performance ratio. If you have more money, get some Potenza S-03s (I haven't autox'd mine yet :(). And if the Azenis are too much, perhaps try some Kumho Ecsta MX tires. I had the ASXs and was happy with them, but I didn't autocross them.

That is all going to be a function of what class you are running in, how competetive you want to be, and how much you are willing to spend.

If these are going to do double duty, ie: street and autox, I would recommend the Kumho MX. If you have a dedicated set of wheels for autox then try some r-compounds like the Kumho Victoracers if you have autox'd before. R-compounds are going to be about the same price as a "luxury/high cost" street tire.

If you tell us more about what you want to do, maybe you will get more specific answers.

i have a set of wheels for autox and a street set.....the MX's were nice but i didnt like them that much i was leaning towards azenis. oh and im running in sts

Well, if you want a competetive tire, go with the Falken 615, Kumho MX, or the new Hankook Z212 -RS2. I can't imagine the ES100s competing with the likes of the three I mentioned.

Note: the MXs don't get their stickiest until they are worn down, almost to the wear indicators, until then, the tread blocks deflect a little.

I run the Avon TechR and love them. The TechRa is just the newest compound, not necessarily better for OE (I assume you meant rims). The Avons have an extremely stiff sidewall, which makes them condusive to camber-challenged cars (which many stock cars are). Plus they are less than 140 tread wear, so they are not STS legal.

Most of the folks around here run Yokohama AVS ES100's... A little more predictable and stable than the Azenis and Exsta MX's, from what I've heard around.

At any rate, if you have the cash for 'em, go for Avon Tech R's. =) Tell us how they work out, too! Hehe.

There are also Avon Tech RA's, which are designed to fit OE tires a little better, apparently.

For an autocross tire, the AVS ES100 blows goat chunks.... The amount of tread squirm is INSANE!!!!! The Azenis are nice for STS, and so are the MXs.... I haven't tried the new compound azenis yet though....

the least muss and fuss is going to be the Azenis. the 'kook and the MX need to be shaved to get max performance from them (at which point the 'kooks seem to be as good as the falkens), while the Falken can be run at full tread.

the S-03 is a phenomenal rain tire and pretty good in the dry, but for the money, go w/ one of the above. the ES100 is a good street tire, but not close.

IMO, the 205/50/15, while good, is not *quite* enough rubber for the protege (although i'm only on 6.5" rims and your DX is probably lighter than my ES)...if you can, get the 215/45/16s on 7-7.5" wheels. that should do nicely.

my 16s are what my street tires are on, i was going to use my stock 15's for autox

and how do the older azenis compare to the new 615's?

I've got the new and old Azenis, the 215s and 615s. The 615s do seem to have more grip and take longer to heat up and get greasy. Downside is they were $100/tire in the 205/50/15 size, quite an increase from the old price. I was eyeing the new Hancooks which are a little cheaper but they were backordered for a month and I am happy w/ the Azenis RT-615s. I'd recommend them for STS, no R-comps allowed for us.

I dunno, man... The Excsta MX's and Azenis are nice and sticky at first, but I found on the long course they got REALLY greasy. An 80 second average course run in a Miata led to feelings that felt like they were driving on Jello. The ES100's stayed consistant through the whole course.

Also, if you read on the page for the Tech R-A's, here's what it says:

"Compared to the original Tech R tires, Tech RA radials are further tuned to make the most of the narrower Original Equipment wheel sizes utilized in the Stock classes and are designed to reduce times by blending great dry traction with improved steering response and cornering stability without a reduction in treadwear."

On this page: http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=Avon&tireModel=Tech+R-A

Third paragraph down. I'm only repeating what the manufacturer says about the Tech RA's.

ive done a track day in the azenis 615 and they held up well through 20 minute sessions.

Ohh, the 615... Cool. I havn't really seen those yet, here. The ones I'm used to is the Falken Azenis Sport. If they had no problem on 20 minute sessions, I can't imagine they'd have a problem with autocross. Hehee.

keep in mind this was at about 90%-95% the limit of traction, im sure if you are pushing it all the way it may be different.
