Well

I will look to see if I threw out the pic of the prototype MSP that Motor Trend drove in OCT 02 it ran high 14's and it did have hard pipes you could see the pipes in the picture. The hood was up it was a rather small picture but I noticed them right away.
Now I don't remember any mention of hesitation but it wasnt a full road test just a preview ride. I wasn't intrested in the car at the time so I didn't take much notice.
However, there are those (I think) on this board with hard pipes and I don't remember if they claimed to have solved any issues with them.

the first test in car & driver the car have hard intercooler pipes and run how beast not mention of any hesitation

the second car in th second car & driver test have plastic pipes and have a lot of critics fuel problem or computer problems and the veredict

Good chasis tried to find a good motor to perfect marriage

Here are the articles you are looking for.

Notice in the first one the picture of the intercooler piping looking shiny, as though it were made of silicone hosing, or powdercoated aluminum.

Also notice in the second article the quote "Occasionally, the Mazdaspeeds engine surged under load and then rocked with a violent shudder. Fuel problems and computer hiccups were suggested as possible causes."
