As if Nissan's Cube and its new Juke weren't polarizing enough, the Japanese automaker is poised to unveil a convertible top version of its Murano crossover later this year.

The convertible was shown to dealers meeting in Las Vegas earlier this month. It is apparently a version of the 2011 Murano, which this month was given a new front-end look and other improvements.

Reached for comment, Nissan spokesman Tim Gallagher was coy:

He said someone going to the Los Angeles Auto Show later this year "might detect just such a thing."

He added, "We haven't said anything official but it's been out there for a few months and I would tend to believe it."

Nissan sold 31,141 Muranos for the first seven months of the year, a 2.2% improvement over the same period last year, Autodata reports.

Nissan has shown its not afraid to put controversial models out the street. The Cube is a boxy vehicle akin to the first generation of Toyota Scion's xB. The new Juke has an unusual front end.

The News points out that convertible crossovers have been tried before, notably with Chrysler's PT Cruiser, which has since ended production.

Just because they can doesn't mean they should. IMO, they ruined the Murano with the 2nd generation styling. Granted, it was no supermodel to begin with, but they went from "eh" to "ewww".

Yeah. Very true.

It went from ugly to uglier.. It was Kathy Griffin to begin with, now it is rosie o'donnell
