WTF is wrong with our motors?

Ive been thinking alot lately about how much our motors suck.

I didnt have high expectations at all for the car, but damn..Ive never ever heard of a 2.0l only making 98hp. That is seriously pathetic, I mean seriously, and....trust me i hate refering to things like this, but look at Honda motors, There little 1.5l single overhead cam, non-vtec motors put out these kinds of numbers, and they are still faster.

The numbers our cars put out is just mind boggling to me, I really dont understand how its possible for a 2.0 to not even make 100hp. Why didnt mazda just put in a damn 1.2l that the scions use and call it a day.

If anyone has some extensive knowledge on FS motors, your input is appreciated, If there is some retarted divine secret imbedded in our motors that needs to be fixed in order to make power, ill do it..

They do, it just feels like 98hp! :)

But all the road noise makes me feel like I'm going fast, and thats all that matters. To be happy, you must become one with teh slowness. Embrace it.

Oh and don't ever mess with modded Toyora Yarii. THEY WILL OWN YOU!!!

Um, did you bother to test drive the car before you bought it?

BTW: my '02 protege ES had 112 whp/121 wtq after installing intake, header & axle-back

for me, the biggest bang for the buck power adder was definitely the header

still, don't expect a "fast" car

He is. Hate to say it but no way in hell is an unmodified Honda engine (assuming the 1.6L no Si motor here) making more than our cars nor should the Civic be faster. Sure, these cars dyno at like 95 whp stock but Civics are even less than that with even less torque. I know this from numbers and from experience. My from has a '00 Civic EX and when I was still N/A with similar mods (CAI and exhaust) I easily walked away from him (as fast as a 100 whp car walks away from a 95 whp car that is). Again, it's not the engine that sucks so much, it's the ECU. Sure the rods are weak, but that is another argument entirely. It's Mazda's notoriously crabby ECUs that are at fault.

P.S. There are 600+ whp FSDEs

Swap out an MP3 ECU, install a heaader, cai, midpipe, and catback. You'll notice a difference. Still won't be fast, but, it'll be the best bang for your buck. Want fast, be prepared to spend at least $5000. And that'll be fast for a while till the zoom zoom boom sets in.

First of all just cause something has X amount of HP doesnt mean its fast or slow. Mazda isnt known for there Drag cars. If you wanted to by a straight line car you should have bought a Mustang or some other muscle car. Mazda is known for an all around sporty experiance. The Protege is an awsome platform for AutoX and other like races. Hell the MSP stock vs stock can take on just about any car in the twisties.

Agree. These cars are the most fun to drive car ever. I have drove most every car that is in the Pro's class and the its by far the most fun.

Also how dare anyone compare a Mazda to a Honda. They should be shot if u ask me. Thats just wrong.

The FS is a long stroke engine that has a pretty much equal Hp to Tq ratio.

Come one..... ya some honda's have 150ish or more hp, but thats all top end.

You have to get the car moving first to do anything, and thats where the Honda's suck. NO TQ.

HONDA SUCKS!!!!! (except a 6.5hp motor on a mini-bike)

I hate my sportauto when it comes to simple realizations like this (there are other reasons too). I have those same mods on my car (but I guess there could be a difference in specific types of each) + a UDP and only put down 99whp and 106 wtq on a Dynojet.

But even with the auto, it's still a fun car to drive.

Yeah our motors suck, but who cares? Our cars handle like go-carts - I love going into a turn at WOT and jamming out the other side, a true adredline rush if you ask me.

My 1.8L non VTEC Integra motor makes 120 at the wheels, 122 torque. Stock. 140 at crank...I also don't have a/c or p/s, but that wouldn't matter much. Plus Hondas weigh very little.

our cars make no power to the ground what so ever. but dont say that hondas are better, they make no more power then the proteges (minus msp) at the ground. (besides you can beat a honda 0-60ft on foot, try it sometime) but what matters is the handling aspect of the proteges, thats where mazda was going with these cars.
if you wanted some power, you shouldve gotten an msp (not FAST, but quick).

i will say that i can take my friends 03 civic ex (auto, SRI same as me) off the line all day anyday, but i cant beat her from a roll, more top end + vtec

if the mapping in the stock ecu didnt suck so much the proteges would be way better. apart from spending large sums of money on a full haltech setup, theres really not much youre gonna do about that.

just be happy with the way the car drives, its a fun car to toy around in gets damn good gas mileage and looks good while doing it.

Yeah, I never saw anything in the brochure about the Protege being fast....affordable..yes...high quality, dependable, and trustworthy...yes....
fast...nope never even considered it...

Its a zoom zoom thing, most people just don't understand. :D

I've done a lot of stuff and I'm at 118 whp. I'm happy with it. If I want to go fast in a hurry I have another vehicle for that. (do a search for 1950)

Any way I really love how well the P5 handles. You have no idea how fun it is to out handle a new Mustang in the twisties. Or to take a corner at speed and still turn into the correct lane while you watch the Camaro behind you slide across two lanes trying to keep up with you in the corner. HAHAHAHA!
